12:30 a. m. 7 Passage to Adventure. Directed by Gordon Douglas So-so romance and airplane drama centering on an air base that houses this THE RICHARD NIXON WATERGATE SPECIAL on television Monday night demonstrated once again that it takes more than a name star to come up with a television hit. The script was trite, dated, and patronizing, and the theme of the show an updating of Harry Truman's famous "The Buck Stops Here" number was dissipated in a chorus of patriotic music.

The show opened with a sketch in which the star was cast as an investigative journalist in search for the truth behind a major news event. As a reporter, however, the star was less than convincing. He omitted a key facet of the story when he failed to report, in his recapitulation of events, his own attempt to bury the story by invoking executive privilege to prevent White House aids from testifying before the Congress. HIS IMPRESSION at times was a tragicomic caricature of a biased journalist. He accepted the word of public officials despite lack of substantiation, flatly rejected the possibility that rival reporters might be on a big Real reporters, of course, tend to the opposite line of skepticism.

The climactic moment of the show followed a skillfully-paced but hackneyed sermon on The Necessity for a Great Leader to Pursue the Difficult Course: "The easiest course would be for me to blame those to whom I delegated the responsibility to run the campaign. But that would be the cowardly thing to do. I will not place the blame on subordinates, on people whose zeal exceeded their judgment, and who may have done wrong in a cause they deeply believed was right. "In any organization, the man at the top must bear responsibility. That responsibility belongs here, in this office.

I accept it." IT WAS A DRAMATIC moment, a stunning, breathtaking glimpse of the nature of heroism. But, alas; the audience was given no time to appreciate it. "And I pledge to you tonight in this office," the star continued, "that I will do everything in my power to insure that the guilty are brought to justice." If anyone was guilty, however, there was little indication of it on the show. There were instead three resignations ruefully accepted "from two of the finest public servants I know" and from "a distinguished public servant" and another accepted apparently without ruefulness that of the counsel to the President. Yet another distinguished man one of "unimpeachable integrity and rigorously high not resign but was given "absolute authority to make all decisions bearing on the prosecution of the Watergate case." THE LANGUAGE of the script made it extraordinarily difficult to tell the good guys from the bad guys if indeed there are any bad guys.

If not, the audience is entitled to ask the dramatist why he even wrote the sketch. The impact, such as it was, was further dulled by the production number that followed, a patriotic chorus featuring West German Chancellor Willy Brandt, "the year of Europe," nuclear arms limitation, peace in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, "Peace with Honor," jobs for all who can work, help for those who cannot, a "climate of decency and civility," and the God-given rights of neighbors. From there the star seped into a touching benediction: "Tonight I ask you for your prayers to help me in everything I do thruout the days of my Presidency to be worthy of their hopes those of "millions of people all over the world' and of yours. "God bless America and God bless each and every one of you."
