An AEC spokesman said an analysis of radioactive debris from the Chinese explosion indicated the "technology of the device was that which we would associate with an early nuclear test." 1 The spokesman called it a "low yield" device. This would be roughly 20 kilotons, or an explosive force equal to 20,000 tons of T. N. T. Fallout Is Analyzed The additional evidence on the magnitude and type of the Chinese nuclear test was gathered by analysis of airborne radioactive debris, or fallout, the AEC said.

The commission's statement made it clear that it was not a thermonuclear or hydrogen device. It was a fission blast employing 'uranium 235, the AEC said. The AEC announcement came after it was learned that the United States knew in advance about Red China's test thru photographs taken from U-2 planes flown by Nationalist Chinese pilots, reconnaissance by satellites, and plain spy methods. Forecast by Rusk A key role in gathering proof that the Chinese Reds were on the verge of setting off a nuclear device was played by American trained nationalist Chinese pilots flying the high-altitude U-2 planes. The atomic blast came at 3 a.

m. on Oct. 16. Just 17 days previously Secretary of State Dean Rusk issued a public announcement saying it was imminent. When Rusk did so, Washington thought the explosion might come on Oct.

1 to celebrate the Chinese Communist regime's 15th anniversary. 8 ON RELIGIOUS PILGRIMAGE DIE AS BOAT LISTS Colon, Panama, Oct. 21 ttJPD At least eight persons drowned today when an overloaded boat carrying more than 100 religious pilgrims listed and threw some of them into the water. The accident occurred just 300 feet off the town of Port Bello, where an annual Black Christ festival is held. The passengers were going to the festival.

National coast guard headquarters retrieved three bodies. Port Bello's normal population of 1,000 is swelled by thousands of pilgrims who come every Oct. 21 to venerate the Black Christ, a statue believed to possess miraculous healing powers.
