10 Section 2 Chicago Tribune, Friday, February 21, 1986 Obituaries Almansc Llewellyn Welch, former Indianapolis 500 official Steve Akin; cancer fight led him to long-lost kin I steward for races in Indianapolis, Springfield, Milwaukee and St. Paul. "He loved racing," said his son-in-law, Merton Sargent. "He certainly had to. Most, of his work for many years was unpaid." Mr.

Welch was in charge of drivers before the race and could call them on the carpet for such i offenses as "driving too hard." As chief observer, he introduced lights to replace the yellow caution or red stop flags. Observers around the track reported to him on race conditions and he determined when the caution light went on. Mr. Welch started his career as a railroad fireman and then became an engineer. He took a leave of absence and was an automotive engineer and trouble shooter for Mobil Oil.

He retired after 22 years with that firm. He studied diesels and returned to the Milwaukee Road as a railroad engineer. Survivors include his daughter, Myrna Sargent; two grandchildren; and four By Kenan Heise Llewellyn "Ike" Welch, 85, a retired automotive and train engineer, attended his first "500" automobile race at the Indianapolis Speedway in 1911. He began as an official there in 1922, retiring as chief observer in 1963. Graveside services for Mr.

Welch, a resident of Sterling, 111., will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Mt. Emblem Cemetery, Elmhurst. He died at home Sunday. Mr.

Welch, who was responsible for safety at the track before the race started, instituted a driver's, test that all drivers, no matter how experienced, had to take before they could drive in the "500." He never told a driver he had passed, but simply walked over to him and gave him a shiny penny. A 1950 Detroit newspaper article described him as "fair, impartial and steeped with ability." It said his firmness and concern for safety resulted in grumbling and then respect from veteran drivers. He started going to Indianapolis races in 1911 and did not miss a race after that. He also worked as Israeli 1 1 By Rudolph linger Services for Steve Akin, 25, who had found a long lost brother and sister while fighting a losing 27-month battle with leukemia, will be held Saturday in Victoria, Tex. "Steve never quit, he hung in there and fought to the end," remarked his wife, Deanna, 22.

"I believe he won his battle, and now he is in peace." Mr. Akin's death Wednesday was a result of "complications due to leukemia," according to the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute in Houston, the facility he first entered Nov. 22, 1983. It was nearly a year ago that Mr.

Akin, a Texas chemical worker, began a search for a brother and a sister who had been put up for adoption in Chicago in 1957. Doctors had told him that a bone-marrow transplant from one of his siblings might help him in his fight for life. Efforts by a Chicago agency, Truth Seekers in Adoption, and news stories, led to the discovery of the brother, John Davis, 24, of suburban Schiller Park, and the: sister, Barbara Davis, 29, of Green Bay, Wis. They flew to Houston to meet their brother for the first time and to submit to tests, which indicated, however, that their bone marrow was not compatible with Mr. Akin's.

Earlier tests on Mr. Akin's two sisters in Texas his twin, Sandra Campbell, of Bay City, and Winna Miller, 26, of Victoria had pro-'duced the same negative results. Mr. Akin's illness took him in and out of the hospital as physicians tried various treatments. His wife said Mr.
