Adalbert. Visitation Thursdo, to 9 p.m. 666-2673. Pulitzer Prize reporter Hugh Hough Hugh Hough, Pulitzer. Prize-winning writer for the Chicago SunTimes, died Wednesday in his La Grange Park home, the day after his 62d birthday.

Mr. Hough and Art Petacque, a Sun-Times investigative reporter, won the 1973 Pulitzer Prize for general reporting for their extensive examination of the mysterious 1966 murder of Valerie Percy, daughter of former U.S. Sen. Charles Percy Miss Percy was slain in the family's Kenilworth home while her father was waging the campaign that led to his election to the senate that year. The Pulitzer Prize judges commended Mr.

Hough and Petacque for uncovering evidence in the murder. Mr. Hough, a member of the Sun-Times news staff for 34 years, died shortly after a visit to the newspaper's city room, where he thanked co-workers for a birthday card they had sent him. He had been absent from the city room since late March. For several months, he had been undergoing, treatment for cancer of the esophagus, but had chosen to continue working as long as possible.

In recent weeks his voice had been reduced to a whisper, coworkers said. In 1974, Mr. Hough and que joined forces to write a SunTimes column of behind-thescenes reports on law enforcement efforts, crime syndicate activities and other local topics. Originally called "OutFront" the column more recently was identified simply by their two names, "Petacque-Hough." During most of Mr. Hough's Sun-Times career he was a rewriteman, taking calls from reporters who were at the scene of news events a and turning their often jumbled and disjointed facts into readable newspaper stories.

Sometimes the stories appeared under Mr. Hough's byline but, more often, in accordance with newspaper protocol, they bore the names of the reporters who turned in the notes. colleagues described the softspoken Mr. Hough as unflappable under deadline pressures. In a business where fast-breaking developments sometimes rub nerves raw, he was remembered for almost never losing his temper.

"And because he never wanted to be an editor," added a co-worker. Over the years, Mr. Hough wrote literally thousands of major news stories about the events of Nathan Kaplan, enzyme research leader -Dr. Nathan a leader in cancer and research, died Tuesday illness. taught at the University ICHVATAL Joseph V.
