a a a a a a a a a a Section 4 Chicago Tribune, Wednesday, May 30, 1984 Obituaries Leanita McClain, 32, Tribune columnist and editorial writer AWARD WINNING Tribune columnist. Leanita McClain, 32, was the first black member of The Tribune's editorial board and was selected as one of the 10 most outstanding young working women in America in the March, 1984, edition of Glamour magazine. Miss McClain was found dead Tuesday in her South Side home by a neighbor. Police said it appeared Miss McClain had taken her life. "Leanita was an extraordinarily talented and sensitive person who had a love of the language, the city and its people and her craft.

She devoted herself to encouraging young people to aspire and achieve. own achievements were remarkable," said Jack Fuller, Tribune. editorial page editor of The Miss McClain worked her way through Chicago State University as a part-time classified ad taker for The Tribune, and joined the editorial staff of the newspaper in 1973. Miss McClain was a reporter, copy editor, picture editor, and editor of Perspective, The Tribune's opinion page, as well as holding other positions. She joined the editorial board in September, 1982, as the board's specialist in -minority and urban affairs.

SIN HER COLUMN last Sunday, Miss McClain wrote a scathing denunciation of Mayor Harold Washington's opponents in the Chicago City Council. She gained widespread attention for an article published in the Washington Post on July 24, 1983, when she discussed Chicago's race relations after Washington's election. She wrote: "Why is Chicago this way? Why beloved city, so vital, so prosperous, so exhilarating? I do not have an answer. I wish I did. "So here I am, blacker than I've ever been.

But above all, human- a condition I share with everyone of every hue. I feel. I mistrust. I cry. And now I know that I can She later wrote in a biographical sketch that her Washington Post article "provoked a Chicago alderman to introduce an official resolution demanding that McClain apologize to the city.

However, it also led to her as a subject on ABC News 'Nightline' to discuss the state of America on the 20th anniversary of the 1963 march on A NATIVE CHICAGOAN, Miss McClain grew up in public housing and attended public schools. After receiving her bachelor of arts degree from Chicago State, she earned a master's degree in journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. She later taught copy editing at Medill, served as treasurer of the Chicago Association of Black Journalists and tutored children from the Cabrini pub- Former actress Ann Straus; headed Berkshire Theater GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. Marlowe Straus, who was active in theater and medical projects in the Berkshires and New York City, died after a brief illness. She was in her 70s.

Mrs. Straus had suffered a brief illness and died Saturday at the Haven Hospital in Connecticut. He was 52. His death Monday was attributed to a heart attack, a complication from pneumonia. He was admitted to the hospital earlier this month. Mr. Laurie, who lived in Beverly Hills, was president of Laurence Laurie and Associates, based in Los Angeles with offices in New York and Chicago.

O'Connor, age 84, formerly of Chicago, passed away in Monmouth, Ill. Born Sept. 25, 1899 In Biddeford, Maine. Was the son of Daniel O'Connor and Ellen Driscoll O'Connor. Was reared in Biddeford, Maine and was a graduate of the University of Maine in Englneering.

In 1925 he moved to Chicago and taught for 45 years at Mount Carmel High School. He taught physics and coached track. Was a member of St. Philip Mary Parrish on Chicago's South Side. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Chicago and for a time was employed at Brinks as a courier.

He currently was attending Immaclulate Conception Church of Monmouth. Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Dick Karen Given of Monmouth; one son Michael J. 0'Oconnor of Dayton, Ohio; one granddaughter and five grandsons. He was preceded in death by parents, wife and three brothers.

The mass will be held Wednesday May 30th, 9 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church. Mr. O'Connor will be taken for burial to Springfield, Ohio at the Calvary Cemetery. Rosary was recited Tuesday at Turnbull Funeral Home In Monmouth.
