10 Seclion 4 Chicago Tribune, Thursday, September 27-, 1984 Obituaries Jazz drummer Shelly Manne if. Sneny Manne By Larry Kart SHELDON "SHELLY" Mannc, one of jazz's most accomplished and popular drummers and a key figure in the West Coast jazz movement of the 1950s, died Wednesday in Sun Valley, after suffering a heart attack at his home. He was (14. Mr. Manne is survived by his wife, Florence.

Services will be held Saturday in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood. The son of professional drummer, Mr. Manne was born in New York City and got his start in jazz when he joined the band of trombonist Bobby Byrne at age 19. He then joined clarinetist Joe Marsala's group, taking the place of one of his idols, Dave Tough. "The only picture of a musician I ever had hanging in my house," Mr.

Manne once said, "was of Davey Tough. He used to say, 'Learn your instrument and then forget about In the early 1940s, Mr, Manne became a fixture on New York's busy 52d Street scene, recording with Coleman Hawkins and Dizzy Gillespie. Already admired by his fellow musicians for his impeccable timekeeping and strong sense of swing, he rose to fame when he joined the Stan Kenton Orchestra in 1946. MR. MANNE was featured on many Kenton recordings and drove that often-unwieldy ensemble more successfully than any other drummer.

He won the Down Beat magazine reader's poll award for best drummer from 1947 to 1951 and again from 1954 to 1958. Manne left Kenton in 1952 and settled in California, where he played regularly at the Lighthouse By the Sea in Hermosa Beach and became one of the most sought- album became a bestseller and began the trend toward jazz versions of Broadway show tunes. Mr. Manne led a successful quintet, Shelly Manne and His Men, in the late 1950s and ran a Los Angeles nightclub, Shelly's Manne Hole, which was the city's major jazz outlet until it closed in 1972. Continuing to work in the Hollywood film studios throughout the 1970s, Mr.

Manne also formed a group called the L.A. Four, which included saxophonist Bud Shank, guitarist Laurindo Almeida and Bassist Ray Brown. Most recently he lead a trio that featured pianist Frank Collett and bassist Monty Budwig. Their Chicago appearance this March at the Jazz Showcase was one of the year's musical highlights. Mr.

Manne was honored by his adopted city in 1984, when Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley proclaimed Sept. 9 Shelly Manne Day. MR. MANNE was a remarkable technician, especially on brushes, which he handled with the grace of a soft-shoe dancer. Perhaps his greatest contribution to jazz, however, lay in the area of spirit.

Any group that included Mr. Manne was sparked by the constant zest of his drumming and his sensitivity to the efforts of other players. Always eager to embark on new musical adventures, he led many of the West Coast avant-garde recordings of the 1950s and, in 1960, played on the second album of radical saxophonist Ornette Coleman. "Musicians," Mr. Manne once said, "should really sit down and realize what a great life they have.

They're doing something they want to do. They're being creative and very few people have an outlet for their creativity. So musicians have it made, especially when they have talent and are working." after percussionists for jazz record-ings and Hollywood movie soundtracks. Mr. Manne appeared in "The Man With the Golden Arm," played on the soundtracks of many other films and televison shows, including the "Peter Gunn" series, and made hundreds of jazz albums as a leader and as a sideman in the 1950s.

In this period, Mr. Manne became known for the subtle wit of his playing. On "Martians Go Home," a recording he made under the leadership of trumpeter Shorty Rogers, Mr. Manne took a drum "break" by spinning a half-dollar on the head of his tom-tom. IN 1957, Mr.

Manne helped to popularize jazz when he formed a trio with pianist Andre Previn and bassist Leroy Vinnegar and recorded an album of songs from the musical "My Fair Lady." He died Monday in Michael Reese Hos-' pital and Medical Center. Mr. Henderson, a native of Yazoo, left a job as a waiter and chef's helper at the Edgewater' Beach Hotel in 1931 to start the first black-run home milk delivery business in Chicago. His firm, Crescent Milk, used pictures of his young daughters as a trademark. He later switched to a Lake View Dairy route and saw the firm change its name to Joe Louis Milk Co.

In World War II, Mr. Henderson started a textile and plastic goods firm Metropolitan Manufacturing Co. that was a subcontractor to several makers of uniforms, bedding and academic gowns. He then founded the Metropolitan School of Tailoring, which trained hundreds of military veterans in tailoring and management for the needle trades. IN 1952, HE began what is now Marion Adult Education and Career Training Center as a business and secretarial school.

The center has an enrollment of 250 and has training contracts with private, state and federal programs. He died Wednesday in Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital in nearby Darby. Mr. Facenda, whose broadcast career spanned 51 years, had suffered from lung cancer, according to WCAU-TV, where he was news anchor for 25 years.

After retiring as news anchor in 1973, he hosted public-affairs programs for WCAU-TV and continued to narrate the weekly NFL highlights show. "His marvelous voice and unique delivery will always be an important part of the history of the National Football League," NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle said. "WE'LL NEVER replace him," said Steve Sabol, executive vice president of NFL Films of Mt. Laurel, N.J. The company had used Mr.

Facenda's rich baritone as the voice-over for its highlight films, "The NFL Week in Review" and Super Bowl specials, since 1962. "He had a voice that could make a laundry list sound dramatic," Sabol said. Mr. Facenda, a native of Portsmouth, moved to Philadelphia in 1926 with his family. He began his broadcasting career as a substitute sports announcer at Philadelphia radio stations WHAT and WIP while a student at Villanova University.

He later worked at WIP for 17 years before joining WCAU-TV. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a son, John and two grandchildren.
