And as a result, wood engraving continues to be used in printing photos or line, drawings of technical or scientific instruments or materials. Mr. Friedlander worked for such printers as Rosenow Printing John and Oilier andiw.F. Hall Printing Co. Much of his work was done in the old Printers Row historic area.

In the mid-1930s, he began a professional relationship with a new magazine in Chicago. That connection would continue for more than 40 years, as he worked on every issue of Esquire magazine, doing artwork and graphics. The publication moved its editorial offices to New York in the 1950s. i Mr. Friedlander retired in 1970.

Survivors, besides his son, include his wife, Marcia; a stepdaughter, Sally Finch; two grandchildren; and a brother, Leo. mand," an Army drama, was performed by the Desilu Playhouse. The penchant toward mystery writing earned them a record four Edgar Awards from the Mystery Writers of America for contributions to the writing of mystery stories in television series.

When not working on a television series they were writing stage plays, including the Broadway show "Merlin," a showcase for the magic tricks of Doug Henning, and television movies. "That Certain Summer," which was broadcast in 1972, was one of the first television films about a homosexual relationship. "My Sweet Charlie" was the story of an interracial friendship, and "The New York Timet Newt service NEW YORK Richard Levin-son, one of television's most prolific and respected writers, died of a heart attack Thursday in Los Angeles. He was 52. He had collaborated with his partner, William Link, for nearly four decades, since they wrote plays in junior high school.

Among the team's creations were such hit series as "Murder, She Wrote" and "Columbo," and dozens of films and television movies, including "That Certain Summer," "The Execution of Private Slovik" and "My Sweet Charlie," for which they won an Emmy Award. The collaboration and the friendship of Mr. Levinson and Link began in 1946 in junior high school in suburban Philadelphia, where, they created radio scripts. At the University of Pennsylvania, the team wrote film criticism for the college newspaper. Their first work in "the big time," Link said, came in 1959 when their play "Chain of Com Brokerage executive Hornblower New York Timet Newt Service NEW YORK Ralph Hornblower former executive vice president of Hornblower Weeks, which later merged with what is now Shearson-American Express to become the country's second-largest brokerage firm, has died.

Friedlander, 86, a pioneer in the printing and graphics industry in Chicago, was an artist, photographer, salesman and teacher. He went to work in 1914 as an artist for Sander Engraving the oldest and last wood-engraving firm in the United States. Services for Mr. Friedlander, of Evanston, will be held at 1 1 a.m. Monday in Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism, 1221 County Line Highland Park.

He died Thursday at home. "He was a man of many talents," said his son, William. "His work in the industry spanned from wood-engraving that dated back hundreds of years to consulting as an expert in quality control on the latest four-color, high-speed presses. He was very gentle, gregarious and laid back." Sander now in is the last wood-engraving firm in the United States "as far as we know," his son said. The use of wood engraving was Frank E.

Lawler Mass for Frank E. Lawler, 86, a retired Chicago police officer, will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday in St Joachim and St. Anne Chapel at Carmelite Carefree Village, a retirement center in Darien. Mr.

Lawler died at the center Wednesday. Survivors include 2 sons, William and Robert; a daughter, Mary Lou James; 13 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. Proctor O. Major Services for Proctor O. Major, 76, a retired employee of Commonwealth Edison will be held at 10:30 a.m.

Saturday in the chapel at 7151 W. 183d St. Tinley Park. Mr. Major, of Tinley Park, died Tuesday in Little Company of Mary Hospital, Evergreen Park.

He is survived by his wife, Annette. Stanley L. Jaske Mass for Stanley "Slim" Jaske, 73, a retired butcher, will be said at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in St Celestine Catholic Church, Elmwood Park. Mr.

Jaske, of Elmwood Park, died Thursday in Resurrection Hospital. Survivors include his wife; Minnie; two brothers, Edward and Chester, and two sisters, Harriet Kuzmiak and Emily Koby. Wilton Rugendorf Services for Wilton Rugendorf, 77, a retired Chicago meat salesman, were held Friday in Miami. Mr. Rugendorf, of North Miami Beach, died Thursday in his home.

In 1979 it merged with Shearson Hayden Stone, now Shearson-American Express, to become the second largest. That year, Mr Hornblower left the firm and acquired a seat on the New York Stock Exchange. He retired from active brokerage activities in 1982. He was born in Boston and was graduated from Milton Academy School in his native Boston. He held a number of jobs, including working nights at a record production company, to earn money to acquire the ship.

He later went to work for Lever Brothers Inc. In. 1943 he moved to Chicago with his family and went to work for the Submarine Signal which made radar equipment for World War II submarines. After leaving Submarine Signal he took a job with Statistical Tabulating Corp. of Chicago, and then went on to found his own company.
