Chicago Tribune, Sunday, November 22, 1987 Section 2 9 Obituaries Gov. 'Big Jim' Folsom fighting alcoholism during his political career, and to his detractors he was nothing short of a scandal. He saw his political star crash when he ran for a third term in 1962 and went on television in an incoherent condition. Politically, he never' recovered from the televised fiasco. The victor that year was George Wallace, who in time would far surpass Mr.

Folsom as the state's most dominant politician. Wallace's second wife, Cornelia, was a niece of Mr. Folsom. Mr. Folsom was bom on Oct 9, 1908, in Coffee County, Ala.

He later graduated from the University of Alabama but his schooling ended when the Pea River flood of 1929 forced him to return home to help his family. Survivors include his second wife, Jamelle. MERRITT Ellen M. Merritt. of Clarendon Hills, dear aister of Mildred M.

455-1200 Alabama ex CULLMAN, Ala. (AP) Former two-term Gov. James E. "Big Jim" Folsom, a 6-foot-8 folk hero who built a reputation as a moderate on race issues during turbulent times, died Saturday. He was 79.

Mr. Folsom died about 3 a.m. at his Cullman home, said an assistant to Lt. Gov. Jim Folsom the former governor's son.

Mr. Folsom was in failing health in recent years and was legally blind for more than a decade. But despite physical ailments, he kept up his love affair with the ballot, running for one office or another every election season, until finally he was bedridden in his last years. He won his first four-year term as governor in 1946, stumping the state with the Strawberry Pickers band and the song "Ya'U Come" as his campaign theme. Mr. Mavon died Thursday in Ft. Lauderdale, where he had lived for the last 17 years. A former Hinsdale resident, Mr. Mavon was the son of the firm's founder and had been with the firm since 1934.

He was a 1934 graduate of Denison University in Granville, Ohio, where he was a lifetime member of the school's board of trustees. He also was a former director of the Trinity Universal Insurance Dallas; a former director of the Godair Home in Hinsdale; a former member of the Union League Club of Chicago; and a member of the Hinsdale Golf Club.
