When it comes to fatigue, Goldsmith said, "I know a lot about it. I became interested in the subject I was in graduate school and saw how women were trying to handle all their responsibilities. And, I've experienced it myself." The professor, who has a bachelor's degree in social science from Florida State University and her master's and doctorate in family ecology from Michigan State University, has continued to be immersed in her career and family and also has continued to observe how being tired affects women and men. In 1987, she began a study of fatigue with a grant from the educational foundation of the American Association of University Women. The recently released survey was of 666 clerical and professional employees of Florida State University, 72 percent of whom have children.

There were more than 400 women in the study. Some of her findings: 60 percent of those surveyed reported they sometimes felt fatigue on the job; 60.5 percent reported they felt it at home. 2 percent were never fatigued at work; 3 percent never at home. 22.6 percent rarely felt fatigue at work; 18.3 percent, rarely at home. While doing her research, Goldsmith reports, she became so identified with the subject of being tired that "I became known as the Dear Abby of fatigue." Though she knows how important it is to have a sense of humor to combat stress, Goldsmith also emphasizes that fatigue is no laughing matter, especially to women who are "trying to manage both work and family areas of their lives and the spillover in between."
