10 Section 2 Chicago Tribune, Friday, February 24, 1989 Obituaries Almanac Donald Murdoch, aide to Nixon and Rumsfeld MADISON, Wis. (AP) Donald Murdoch of Evanston, a White House staff member when Richard Nixon was president, has died of leukemia. He was 46. Mr. Murdoch, who died Wednesday, served as assistant director of the national Cost of Living Council in the Nixon years and worked for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

A Chicago native and a 1964 Uni versity of Wisconsin graduate, Mr. Murdoch returned to Madison in 1973 and was elected to two terms on the city council. Illness prevented him from seeking a third term. In 1982, he was appointed vice president and general counsel of G.D. Searle and living in Evanston until 1988.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen, and a daughter, Cassie. Services are Sunday in Madison. Abel Wolman, 96, co-developer of chlorinated drinking water FARNAM Robert G. Farnam, age 77, beloved fTuBband of the lato Pauline B. Farnam, died at his home In Three Lakes, Wl, Feb.

Davis ol Tulsa, OK; one son, Bob of Menominee Falls, Wl; a brother, Franklin of Green Valley, AZ; a sister, Nellie Petrlck of Glen Ellyn, IL and saven grandchildren, Elflott Reichart, Bradley Green, Kris Drwis, Ryan Green, Nikkl Green, Ashley Davis and Adrlenne Davis. He was continously and ever devoted to all of thorn. For over 50 years ho was Intimately Involved In gasket manufacturing serving as President of the F.D. Farnam Co.

Chicago and Triple Inc. In Neceda, Wl; his two brothers, Franklin and John were partners with him. Since his retirement in 1979 he has remained extremely active In the gasket Industry, as a consultant, researcher and Innovator. He respected and appreciated the out-of-doors and hada passion for trout fishing, partridge and dBer hunting. Funeral services will be et 3 p.m.

He was 96. In 1918, working for the Maryland Department of Health, Mr. Wolman and chemist Linn Enslow, who had been a Johns Hopkins University classmate, developed a formula for treating water at filtration plants with chlorine. Info. Curloy Funeral Juan Peron was elected president of Argentina in 1946. On Feb. 24, 1530, Charles was crowned emperor of the Holy Roman empire and king of Italy. In 1803, the U.S.

Supreme Court ruled that it was the final interpreter of constitutional issues in Marbury vs. Madison. In 1863 Arizona was organized as a territory. In 1868 the House of Representatives began impeachment proceedings against President Andrew Johnson for violating the Tenure of Office Act; he was acquitted by the Senate. In 1903 the U.S.

acquired a naval station on Cuba's Guantanamo Bay. In 1920 a group of Germans organized the National Socialist Party, forerunner of the Nazi Party that would be led by Adolf Hitler. In 1942 the Voice of America went on the air for the first time. In 1945 U.S. troops recaptured Manila in World War II.

In 1967 the Nizam of Hyderabad, 81, one of the richest men in the world, died in India. Gordon Wolman, chairman of the department of geography and environmental science at Johns Hopkins, which Mr. Wolman once headed, and four grandchildren.

Born Dec. 5, 1914, in the East Prussian city of Osterode, Mr. Kirst left school in 1933 to become a career soldier in Hitler's army. He served throughout World War II and was imprisoned by U.S. occupation forces after the fall of Nazi Germany.

He began his writing career in the late 1940s and gained prominence with his "08-15" trilogy in the mid-1950s. "08-15" is a military designation for basic recruits.
