Down, Ireland. 777-3944. Dr. Cecil Krakower, kidney researcher treal. He did his residency in pathology with the Harvard-affiliated hospitals.

From 1936 to 1944, he served as a pathologist at the Columbia University-associated School of Tropical Medicine in Puerto Rico. He then joined the faculty at the University of Illinois. In 1955 he was named head of its pathology department, as well as pathologist-in-chief of its research and educational hospitals. "Those of us who studied under him remember him as one of the great teachers of the college of medicine," said Dr. Jose Manaligod, di-' rector of the U.

of department of anatomic pathology. "He had great diagnostic skills with the microscope. He is highly respected for his research in pathology, especially his investigation of the basement membrane. It was seminal work, which is still very often quoted and is today reaping a lot of benefits in the treatment of many glomerular diseases." Services for Dr. Krakower, who had moved to Phoenix in 1973, were held in that city. He died Monday in Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix. Dr. Krakower defined the characteristics of the glomerular basement membrane of the kidney, a primary target or cause of renal diseases.

When he was named Distinguished Research Professor at the hospital, he was only the third staff member in the history of U. of I. to receive the award. "He was very modest," said his daughter, Diana Calica. "He was also the first in the 1940s to identify the relationship between high salt intake and elevated blood pre-sure.

Persons in his field know about his work, but he never personally talked about it." PARIS (AP) Sheik Abbas Ben Sheik El Hocine, rector of the Great Mosque of Paris and considered the top Moslem religious authority in France, died Wednesday night after suffering a heart attack, officials said. He was 77. Sheik Abbas was evacuated by helicopter Wednesday evening from the Hotel Crillon to the Val de Grace military hospital after being stricken.

A statement issued by the mosque said Sheik Abbas died shortly after being admitted to the hospital. It said the rector's body would be returned to his homeland, Algeria, on Friday. Sheik Abbas was made rector of the Paris mosque in 1982. He often acted as a spokesman for French Moslems, a role disputed by some, and as a liaison between the French government and the Moslem community. As many as 3 million Moslems live in France, making it the nation's second religion after Roman Catholicism.

It was not immediately known whether Sheik Abbas had met with PLO chief Yasser Arafat, who was staying at the Crillon. Sheik Abbas, with his tinted spectacles and astrakhan hat, was a well-known figure to the French media, appearing in occasional television interviews and commenting on political developments affecting the Moslem community. He became for many a soothing and fatherly symbol of a moderate Islam. At the height of the furor over Salman Rushdie's "The Satanic Verses," Sheik Abbas advised the French not to pay so much attention to this "disrespectful writer." Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhol-. Iah Khomeini issued a death sentence on Rushdie, saying he had blasphemed Islam in his book. Sheik Abbas worked for religious reform in French colonial Algeria, to help return the North African, land to its Arab and Islamic character.

Following Algerian independence, he spent four years as president of the Supreme Islamic Council. As rector of the Paris mosque, his human qualities soon won him respect from Algerian Moslems, who make up the largest part of 1 the French Moslem community. He took to opening the doors of. the mosque in winter to provide shelter for the homeless. PRATAPAS Matthew M.
