The Woln-elefn Brothers Wllmetfo Chapet, 256-5700. British film actor Harry Andrews, 77 LONDON (AP) Harry Andrews, a craggy, jut-jawed character actor who specialized in military roles, has died at age 77. Mr. Andrews died in his sleep Monday night at his home in the southern village of Salehurst, said his agent, Lawrence Evans. Mr.

Andrews made his stage debut at age 21 and played many Shakespearean roles, including Horatio in "Hamlet" in New York in 1936. After serving in the artillery in World War II, he made his first movie in 1952, opposite Alan Ladd in "The Red Beret." He once said he was offered a Hollywood contract in his younger days, but "they wanted me to have my cars pinned back like Clark Gable and the gap filled in between my front teeth. I wouldn't have minded that, but then they said the name was too plain and would have to go, and a bit of chin. So I said no." Instead, he became a stalwart of postwar British cinema, most memorably as the tough warden of a British army prison opposite Scan Connery in the 1965 film "The Hill." Mr. Andrews' towering physique and growling voice made him a natural for the part of a general in "The Battle of Britain" in 1969, but he also showed a comic flair as the campy older man in 1970's McCOY Bill McCov.
