Section 2 Chicago Tribune, Monday, May 22, 1989 GINLEY Almanac Obituaries Economist John Hicks, British Nobel laureate money supply is largely unimportant in determining demand. Mr. Hicks was a pioneer in streamlining the general economic equilibrium theory, which explained the determination of prices and allocation of resources in an economy. It was for work on the equilibrium theory that Mr. Hicks was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science in 1972, sharing it with Kenneth Arrow of Harvard University.

He was educated at Balliol College, Oxford, and held academic posts at the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Manchester and the London School of Economics. He was married for SO years to another distinguished economist, the late Ursula Hicks. From Chicago Tribune wires LONDON John Hicks, the first Briton to win a Nobel prize for economics, died Saturday at age 83, his family said Sunday. Mr. Hicks shared the Nobel prize in 1972 for his work on the determination of prices and allocation of resources in an economy.

He was awarded a knighthood in 1964 for services to economics. He frequently attacked monetarist theory, which advocates strict control of money supply as the major weapon against inflation. "What is wrong with monetarism is that it tries to put all the kinds of inflation into the same box," he once said. His early work paralleled that of J.M. Keynes, who believed the John Muccio; veteran diplomat was first ILSL envoy to S.

Korea Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1859. On May 22, 334 B.C., Alexander the Great defeated Persian king Darius III at Granicus, Turkey. In 1570 Abraham Ortelius, a Flemish cartographer, published the first modern atlas. In 1813 composer Richard Wagner was born in Leipzig, Germany. In 1819 the American steamship Savannah set out for Liverpool, England, from Savannah, becoming the first steamship to cross the Atlantic.

In 1924 the body of Bobby Franks, 1 3, was found in a ditch outside Chicago. University of Chicago students Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb later were arrested and convicted on charges of kidnaping and murder. In 1939 Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini signed a a political and military alliance between Germany and Italy. In 1947 the Truman Doctrine to contain communism went into effect. In 1979 Canadians voted to put the Progressive Conservatives in power, ending the 11 -year tenure of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.

In 1981 Teamsters Union President Roy Lee Williams, who assumed office only a week earlier, was indicted by a federal grand Jury on charges of conspiring to bribe a U.S. senator. In 1984 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that law firms may not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, religion or national origin in promoting lawyers to the status of partner. Muccio, a career diplomat and the United States' first ambassador to South Korea, has died at 89. The former Foreign Service officer died Friday of congestive heart failure at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington. Wednesday in St. Pancratius Catholic Church, 4025 S. Sacramento Ave. Father Lewandowski, a Chicago native, died Friday at the seminary in Olivet. Father Lewandowski was professed a missionary in 1952 in La Salette, France and was ordained into the ministerial priesthood in 1954 in Rome.

He served as a priest 32 years in Milwaukee, Red Lake, Ontario, and Olivet. While in Olivet, he served as Provincial from 1976 to 1984 and administered to the diocese of Springfield and Peoria.
