from chapel. 409 W. North avenue, to St. Philip time as required by the committee." Failure of the witnesses to attend will make them "subject to the pains and penalties in such cases made and provided," the subpenas read. When told that Edward J.

Lefty Freed, believed to be the Lefty Freed Friedman named in one subpena, died several months ago, Bane said there "undoubtedly were two Lefty Freeds and that one still is alive and running a handbook the near north side. Edward J. Freed's wife, Ruth, figured in the investigation of the 1936 mystery killing of Audrey Vallette. Count Upon Little People In reply to comments by observers that the subpena list contained few "big" names, Bane said a number of little people were included because investigators felt it would be thru such persons that they could learn who was active in rackets and how the racket system works. The approaching hearings are preliminary to an investigation which is expected to last thru the summer, Bane said.

Some top men will be among policemen to be called, Bane said. The fact that a policeman's name is in the list does not mean he is suspected of having done anything wrong, Bane stated. Aid. DuBois 9th, chairman of the anti-crime committee, said the names of policemen on the list will not be made public until after an executive session of the committee to be held at 9 a. m.

Monday, shortly before the hearings get underway. Scrutinize All Lists It is the committee's policy to scrutinize the lists of witnesses prepared by Mr. Bane before making the identities of those on the lists public," Du Bois said. The hearings will be held Monday thru Thursday of the coming week, and will be resumed Tuesday, June 3. Arrangements were made yesterday for the opening hearing to be held in the city council chambers, instead of the finance committee's rooms, as planned earlier.

"We came a long way to see John," some shouted amid a bargain-basement scene of confusion outside a 76th st. funeral home. The mob slowed traffic. Some 6,000 persons viewed the body. Several hundred were turned away.

Garfield, 39, who starred in tough guy roles on stage and screen, died yesterday of a heart attack. About 500 persons filed past his brier before the shapel was closed to the public at the request of the family. Another 500 were locked out. They refused to leave and began heckling police as they tugged, pulled, and pushed each other for positions near the door. After about 35 minutes of disorder, the family relented and allowed the doors to be reopened.
