He bought the book for $3.60, and within a month was offered $3,000 for it. Pays $106,000 for Bible Few of his later purchases were acquired at such modest prices. In 1926 he paid what was 'at the time the highest price ever paid for a book $106,000 for of the original copies of the Gutenberg Bible. One of the first books ever printed, it was 471 years old when Dr. Rosenbach bought it.

He topped even that purchase price later, paying $151,000 for the Bay Psalm book. Among his other notable purchases were five pages of the manuscript of Charles Dickens' "Pickwick Papers," for which Dr. Rosenbach paid a signature of Button Gwinnett, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, for $51,000, and the first folio edition of Shakespeare's 44 Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies," considered the world's most famous book In English, for $62,000.
