Boulevard 8-0703. nt. uuuim ana Meroert, loving grandmother of 10. fond sister of Dora Levin to Other Institutions The voluntary acceptance of 37 maternity patients by other Chicago hospitals Friday night and the scheduled discharge of 30 mothers and 30 babies yesterday from the maternity ward of County hospital has lessened congestion there, Warden Fred Hert-wig said. 'State health department officials Friday ordered County's maternity ward closed to new cases except emergencies because of unsafe overcrowding.

The crowded condition, they said, was caused by a shortage of beds for expectant mothers and a shortage of baby space due to the closing of the premature infants nursery because of an outbreak of diarrhea there and the crowding of the regular nursery in the main hospital building. Five Babies Dead The premature nursery, located in a branch building of the hospital, was closed July 10 after the diarrhea outbreak which resulted in the deaths of five infants. Ilertwig and Dr. William Fish-bein, epidemiologist for the city health department, praised managers of 50 other Chicago hospitals with maternity facilities for responding to an emergency appeal Friday by Dr. Herman N.

Fishbein said 100 beds were reported available in the 50 Chicago hospitals and that the 37 expectant mothers who appeared at County hospital last night were placed in 16 of the hospitals. Ilertwig said eight expectant mothers who came to the hospital during the night had to be taken as emergency patients because of their advanced stages of labor. Normal Space for 75 Ilertwig said the relief provided by other Chicago hospitals and the schedule of discharge yesterday will enable the hospital's maternity ward census to drop from 105 mothers and 145 infants to 75 mothers and 115 babies today. This compares, he said, with 145 mothers and 183 infants who were in the hospital Friday. The ward has a liormal bed space for 75 mothers.

The figures do not include 27 infants still in the premature infant nursery where two are still suffering from diarrhea but are expected to -recover. There have been no new cases of infection, he added, and the two infected infants are isolated in one of the six rooms of the liursery. Fishbein said Bundesen may decide tomorrow when the ban cn new admissions at County hospital will be lifted. Fishbein said it was impossible to tell the exact germ or virus responsible for the diarrhea outbreak or how the infection began. in i late James, dear mother of Agnes Babka, Angeiine.
