GRAND0WSKI Rabbi Eric scholar and By Kenan Heise Rabbi Eric Friedland, 78, a noted Jewish scholar, vas rabbi emeritus at Temple Sholom and the founding rabbi of Congregation Beth Am, the People's Synagogue, in the South Shore neighborhood.

He was a past president of the Chicago Rabbinical Association, now the Chicago Board of Rabbis. Services for Rabbi Friedland will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Temple Sholom, 3480 N. Lake Shore Dr. He died Wednesday in his Near North Side home.

"Rabbi had all the bearing and dignity of a scholar," said Richard Katz, who served with him at Temple Sholom. "He was dedicated to Jewish and rabbinical studies. He studied six months of every year at one of the yeshivas or rabbinical seminaries in Israel. He then would write scholarly articles on the subjects he had studied," Rabbi Friedland, from Paterson, N.J., was ordained in 1936. He studied at the Hebrew Union College, in Cincinnati, the University of Cincinnati and the University of Michigan.

He received a doctorate in 1960 from the Hebrew Union Edward Barrett, 79, a leading figure in American journalism John A. "He was the kind of person whom people could go to in times of great trouble," Katz said. "I have just seen copies of letters he wrote from the South Pacific telling parents of a son's death or responding for a soldier to a Dear John letter. He would write lone letters and you could tell he cared. Forty years ago, he was the first rabbi to introduce synagogue retreats. They became models for retreats across the country.

Rabbi Friedland founded the People's Synagogue in 1948. It attracted national attention because of its emphasis on encouraging lay participation and leadership. He was an organizing and founding member of the South Shore Commission which attempted to stabilize the community. He joined Temple Sholom in 1975. Rabbi Friedland was a member of the religion and philosophy department at De Paul University.
