Throughout the 1930s, Mrs. Alexander and her husband initiated legal fights that began to open up restaurants, hotels and movie theaters to blacks in Philadelphia. "She was a brillant woman, a pioneer, a person whom not only the black community will miss but the law community and Americans as a whole, because she led so many fights and it's going to be difficult to replace her," said Common Pleas Court Judge Eugene Clarke Jr.

312-545-6974 synagogues on the North Side and North Shore. Mr. Talcott worked for a short time in 1987 for Shalat Kosher Foods in Chicago, whose owners also had several companies that sold nonkosher meats. There he realized that skids of nonkosher chickens were being labeled kosher. Chickens, to be kosher, must meet specific regulations laid down in the Bible.

These require supervision by a rabbi of the killing, preparation and packaging of the chickens. There must be no blood left in them and they must be heavily salted. As a result, kosher meats tend to cost more. Mr. Talcott took his findings to the Chicago Rabbinical Council, which called it the most widespread fraudulent labeling of nonkosher food as kosher in the history of the American Jewish community.

The council took the the Illinois attorney general, who filed suit and obtained a consent degree that included fines and compensation and forced Shalat out of the business of selling kosher foods.
