In 1917 Congress passed the Selective Service Act. In 1920 Karol Wojtyla, who later became Pope John Paul II, was born near Krakow, Poland. In 1933 Congress passed the Tennessee Valley Act, creating the Tennessee Valley Authority for the purpose of flood control and rural electrification. In 1953 American Jacqueline Cochran became the first female pilot to fly faster than the speed of sound. In 1973 former Solicitor General Archibald Cox was appointed special Watergate prosecutor.

In 1974 India set off its first atomic blast, becoming the world's sixth nuclear power. In 1980 the biggest eruption in 123 years shook Mt. St. Helens in Washington state, causing the evacuation of people up to 30 miles away. In 1982 a federal court jury in New York found South Korean evangelist Sun Myung Moon guilty of tax evasion.

In 1983 the House of Representatives voted to cite former EPA official Rita Lavelle for contempt for failing to comply with a subpoena to testify. In 1985 Patti Cooksey became the first female jockey to ride in the Preakness. She finished sixth aboard Tajawa. Attorney for Dillinger 'woman in red' By Kenan Heise Thomas J. Johnson 84, an attorney in Chicago for more than 50 years, was considered an expert on criminal and corporate law and served in the early 1960s as chairman of the judiciary committee of the Chicago Bar Association.

A Barrington Hills resident, he died Thursday in his home. "I can tell you this, he was an outstanding lawyer," retired Illinois Appellate Court Judge John J. Lyons said. "He had great integrity and was a good friend." Mr. Johnson, a native of Chicago, graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame and received his law degree there in 1929.

He was an assistant Cook County state's attorney from 1929 to 1933, a corporation counsel in 1934 and a special prosecutor of election fraud cases in Cook County from 1935 to 1937. From 1938 to 1941, he was assistant general attorney for the Chicago Park District. He defended Anna Sage, the "Woman in Red" who had lured bank robber John Dillinger to his Francis D. Roth Francis D. Roth, 79, a Lake Forest resident and a retired attorney for Borden died Tuesday in Lake Bluff Health Care Center.

Mr. Roth, a former Winnetka resident, had retired from the Navy as a lieutenant commander. He was a graduate of Northwestern University and NU's law school. Survivors include his wife, Mary; a daughter, Suzanne Osborn; two sons, Francis Jr. and Robert; five grandchildren; and three brothers.

Lab Schools arts teacher Erickson By Kenan Heise Robert Erickson, 73, a teacher at the Laboratory Schools of the University of Chicago, was an artist whose creative interests included design, music and photography. A resident of Hyde Park, he died at home Thursday. Mr. Erickson was strongly influenced by the writings and teachings of Bauhaus designer and photographer Laszlo Moholy-Nagy. Mr.

Erickson's works were included with his teacher's in a January exhibit, "Moholy-Nagy: A New Vision for Chicago," at the State of Illinois Art Gallery. In 1943, Mr. Erickson was teaching in Fairmount, when he read a book by Moholy-Nagy titled "The New which described an art and design curriculum that combines arts, crafts and technology. Mr. Erickson moved to Chicago to study at the School of Design under Moholy-Nagy, who, had come here from Germany in 1937.

Mr. Erickson became the first student to receive a master's degree from the school, which has since become part of the Illinois Institute of Technology. His interest in photography led him not only to a lifetime of taking pictures but also to collecting and building cameras. His artwork was honored with a retrospective in 1989 by the Hyde Park Art Center. A pamphlet for the show described his teaching: "His classes, even for the younger children, were miniature studios that included painting, printmaking, woodworking, and music, including a course in the history of jazz taught with visiting poet Langston He taught at the Lab Schools from 1944 to 1978.
