Writer Isaac Bashevis Singer, 87 Singer, who won the 1978 Nobel Prize for Literature for his tales of ghetto Jews in Eastern Europe and Jewish immigrants in America, died Wednesday. He was 87. Mr. Singer, who had homes in New York and Surfside, had been ill in a nursing home for several months, said his wife, Alma. Mr.

Singer's native tongue was the Yiddish of Poland's Jews, and he wrote in no other language, even after mastering the English of his adopted country. Acclaim grew over the next two decades as word spread worldwide of his passionate novels and stories of a vanished Jewish culture in Europe and of Jewish immigrants in New York and Florida. Barbra Streisand's 1983 movie, "Yentl," was based on Mr. Singer's story, "Yentl the Yeshiva The 1989 movie "Enemies: A Love Story," was adapted from Mr. Singer's novel about Holocaust survivors in New York.

In a simple, moving Nobel acceptance speech, Mr. Singer spoke a single sentence in Yiddish: "The high honor bestowed on me by the Swedish Academy is also a recognition of the Yiddish language--a language of exile, without a land, without frontiers, not supported by any government." He went on, in English, to describe it as "a language which possesses no words for weapons, ammunition, military exercises, war tactics; a language that was despised by both gentiles and emancipated Jews." At every opportunity, Mr. Singer asserted that Yiddish would survive Joseph P. These childhood times and places were commemorated in such works as "In My Father's Court," "The Magician of Lublin" and his first novel, "Satan in As a youth, Mr. Singer rebelled at a future in the rabbinate and followed his brother into a career as a secular writer. Singer had no patience with fiction grounded in social, political or psychological theory. His own work was inhabited by demon and dybbuks, spirits and specters, and these, he insisted, were part of the real world. "My father had a feeling that, if people believed in demons, they also believed in God, which is true," he once said. "When I write about it, it reminds my reader that he doesn't know about everything and I don't know about everything."
