Showel, veteran journalist lew CAmlings iw Nation's 1 Florist Dial A-M'L'I-N'G'S (265-4M7) College in Lisle, and an instructor at the College of Du Page in mass communications. A native of Toledo, Mr. Showel worked 22 years for Chicago's Southtown Economist community newspaper. He was vice president, treasurer and general manager before resigning in 1953.

He then became executive vice president and director of Pioneer Publishing Co. in the west and North Shore suburbs for 10 years, which included the Oak Leaves newspaper and the Highland Park News. He also was president of Southwest Messenger Press' 10 newspapers in south Cook Coun- In 1965, he became publisher of. The Journal in Wheaton. He retired from publishing in 1971 when Copley Press bought The Journal.

I For the last two years. Showel lived in the Bethlehem, Woods Retirement Living La Grange Park. Mr. Showel is survived by a son, Dr. John five grandchildren; a greats grandchild; a brother; and two sisters.

Showel, 86, former publisher of the Wheaton Daily and Sunday Journal, and a 60-year veteran of the newspaper business in the Chicago area, died Monday in West Suburban Hospital Medical Center, Oak Park. Active in civic work for the last 50 years, Mr. Showel was president for three terms of the Englewood Chamber of Commerce on Chicago's South Side, president of the Englewood Kiwa-nis Club and director of V-f.

On Sept. 25, 1513, Spanish explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama and discovered the Pacific Ocean. In 1775 American Revolutionary War hero Ethan Allen was captured by the English as he led an attack on Montreal.

(He was released in 1778.) In 1789 the first U.S. Congress, meeting in New York, adopted 12 amendments to the Constitution. (Ten of them would become known as the Bill of Rights.) In 1890 Congress established Yosemite National Park. In 1912 Ford Motor Co. established an eight-hour workday and five-day week.

In 1919 President Woodrow Wilson became seriously ill after a speech in Pueblo, during a national speaking tour supporting the Versailles Treaty. (He returned to Washington, where he suffered a stroke Oct. 2 that left him partly paralyzed.) In 1957 with U.S. Army troops standing guard because of unruly crowds, nine black students were escorted to their classes in Little Rock (Ark.) Central High School. In 1978 a jetliner and a private plane collided over San Diego, killing 144 people.

In 1981 Judge Sandra Day O'Connor was sworn in as the first female justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1982 hundreds of thousands of demonstrators in Tel Aviv called for the resignations of Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Defense Minister Ariel Sharon in the wake of a massacre of Palestinians in Beirut. In 1987 the U.S. Senate unanimously approved Judge William Sessions to be director of the FBI.

Elaine Horwitch Elaine Horwitch, 58, a Chicago native who moved to Scottsdalc, in 1955 and became a noted art dealer in the Southwest, died Saturday in Santa Fe. She established Elaine Horwitch Galleries in Scottsdale in 1973 and opened another gallery in Santa Fe in 1976. She also operated galleries in Se-dona, and Palm Springs, Calif. She was a strong proponent of contemporary art and artists in the Southwest. She was named Outstanding Woman of the Year in New Mexico in 1990, and she received the award for "Women and Corporations that have Made a Difference" from the International Women's Forum in 1991.
