Friday, January 31, 1992 HURLEY Obituaries Almanac William Lawlor; worked in investment banking Mr. Lawlor, who was often quoted in the Chicago financial pages on stock market subjects, chaired the Chicago Investors' Information Committee of the Midwest Stock Exchange. He was a board member of Catholic Charities and served as general chairman of the annual awards dinner for Loyola University's Stritch School of Medicine. After retiring from Hornblower Weeks in 1980, he joined Morgan Stanley Co. as a senior investment representative.

He later was associated with the firm of Smith Barney, Harris Upham Co. Survivors, besides his son, include two stepsons, Robert Wilson Jr. and Thomas Wilson; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Cichon; and five grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday in the William H.

Scott Funeral Home, 1100 Greenleaf Wilmette. Mass for Mr. Lawlor will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday in Sts. Faith, Hope Charitv Catholic Church.

191 Linden Winntka. By Kenan Heise William J. Lawlor, 84, retired managing director and head of the Midwest region for the investment banking firm of Hornblower Weeks, was a former director of the Midwest Stock Exchange and former president of the Bond Club of Chicago. A Wilmette resident, he died Sunday in Evanston Hospital. "Most people liked him very much." said his son, William 111.

"He was quick-witted, unassuming and very direct." Mr. Lawlor, a Chicago native, graduated in 1924 from Loyola Academy and in 1928 from Georgetown University. He then joined the bond trading firm of Hickey, Doyle During the Depression, he was a bond trader for the firm and helped it present the initial public offering of Motorola stock in 1937. In 1947, he became associated with Hornblower Weeks, where he rose up the corporate ladder to head the Midwest region. In 1950 President Harry Truman announced he had ordered development of the hydrogen bomb.

On Jan. 31, 1606, English conspirator Guy Fawkes was executed for his part in the Gunpowder Plot to blow up the houses of Parliament. In 1797 composer Franz Schubert was born in Vienna. In 1875 novelist Zane Grev was born in Zanesville, Ohio. In 1892 entertainer Eddie Cantor was born in New York City.

In 1919 Jackie Robinson, later elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame, was born in Cairo, Ga. In 1945 Army Pvt. Eddie Slovik was executed by an American firing squad in France, the only American soldier to be shot for desertion since the Civil War. In 1949 television's first daytime soap opera, "These Are My Children," was broadcast from the NBC station in Chicago. In 1958 the first successful U.S.

Earth satellite, Explorer 1, was launched from Cape Canaveral, Fla. In 1974 a Pan Am 707 jetliner on a flight from New Zealand to the U.S. crashed in Pago Pago in American Samoa, killing 92 of the 101 people aboard. John R. Scott, 73, former chief of Swift Co.

foods Ind. Mr. Scott joined Swift after graduating from college and lived in New York, Kentucky, Texas and Utah. He served in the Army during World War 11, and received a Bronze Star and an Oak Leaf Cluster. He is survived by his wife, Mary; two sons, Tom Scott and Pal Gunning; three daughters, Nancy Scott-Rudnick, Marcia Scott and Jeanne Gunning; two sisters; and six grandchildren.
