8 Section 2 Chicago Tribune, Tuesday, April 21, 1992 GROSS Obituaries William 0. Beers, 77; former Kraft chairman i marketplace. But all that changed with Vietnam and all the subsequent changes in society, and people like me had to relearn their jobs." His new vision of the chairman's job was one of administration, communication and planning, he said. To bridge a gap between top and middle management, he spent two years holding three-day meetings at his Wisconsin farm with 220 executives, taking them in groups of 20. "We were trying to find out the mind of the corporation," he explained.

"But as an outgrowth, those meetings helped identify prime individuals and their capabilities and value systems." His career with Kraft began in 1929 as an assembly operator in Platteville, Wis. His father and grandfather had been cheesemak-ers. In 1937, he became a food technician with Kraft after completing his education at the University of Wisconsin. After holding a variety of positions with the firm, he became vice president of international operations in 1953. He was made president and chief operating officer in 1968 and chairman and chief executive offi cer in 1972.
