8 Section 2 Chicago Tribune, Tuesday, May 1, 1990 FRYMARK Almanac Obituaries Anna Ludmila, former Chicago Opera Ballet star By Kenan Heise Anna Ludmila, 87, a ballerina, was the premiere danseuse of the Chicago Opera Ballet in the 1920s. Her married name was Jean Marie Gee. A resident of Bryan, Texas, she died April 18 in Houston. Miss Ludmila was born in Chicago Englewood neighborhood near 61st Street and Michigan Avenue. Her mother, who had always wanted to be a dancer but had not been allowed to take lessons, started her studying ballet at 5.

By age 13, she had attracted the attention of Chicago Opera Ballet managers, Pavley and Oukramsky, who sent her to the opera ballet school. At 15, she opened as the premiere danseuse at Carnegie Hall with the New York Symphony Orchestra. She was so young that the costumcr lengthened her dress, making her appear older so that child labor legislation enforcers would not close the show. By this time, she had adopted the stage name, Anna Ludmila. Miss Ludmila then appeared in two musical comedies in New York, "Tip-Top" and "Tangerine.

However, she preferred opera work and became the lead dancer for the Chicago Opera Ballet. A '922 Tribune article said, Miss Ludmila has the freshness of youth and the technique of the fine artiste. Wherever she has appeared she has created the highest enthusiasm and applause." Among the roles she danced was the lead in "Aida" as part of a gala for the prince of Wales. In 1929, while in London, she performed at the Coliseum Theater, where she hurt her achilles tendon. The injury eventually ended her career.

She then spent several years as a ballet instructor. When her husband moved to Panama as a civilian employee of the Army, the wife of the country president persuaded her to teach ballet at the national conservatory of dancing. She also di- rected several major ballet productions while there. There were no immediate survivors. Services for Miss Ludmila were held in Bryan, Texas.
