As chairman of the Emergency Crime Committee, he was in. 'the center of a dispute as to whether its findings were hurting or helping the city.

When committee mrrtr bcrs tried to question a police captain about his income, the police officer took the matter to courts which ruled the committee had no power to question him. Democratic aldermen took over the committee and their final findings in 1956 failed to establish any connection between politics crime in Chicago. After his defeat as alderman in the March 1959 election, Mr. Du Bois was appointed to the city's Civil Service Commission (now the Department of Personnel board) and served until 1980. He was a two-term Chicagoland district governor of the Lions, International.

Survivors include two daughters', Barbara McCarthy and Faith Fer-rioli; a brother; seven grandchild dren; and five great-grandchildren, Plans for a memorial service are pending. By Kenan Helse Reginald Du Bois, 87, alderman of Chicago's 9th Ward from 1946 to 1959, served as a city civil service commissioner from 1959 to 1980. He was chairman in the early 1950s of the City Council's Emergency Crime Committee, known popularly as the Big Nine Crime Committee. Mr. Du Bois, a resident for 70 years of the Roseland neighborhood and for the last 17 of.

South Holland, died Tuesday in the Americana Nursing Home in South Holland after a short illness. Mr. Du Bois owned a gasoline station at 111th and State Streets at the time he became an alderman in 1946. He won that first election in a runoff by 120 votes. "Life is a serious business in the 9th Ward," he said in a 1959 campaign interview.

"We enjoy living in a fine community. All of us want to keep it that way. We have good employment, a good business area, parks and recreational facilities, wonderful schools and churches it's a great place to live." Mr. Du Bois was an opponent in the City Council of public Margaret Pearson, 66, headed Fermilab information office" the structure of its smallest that of the atom. Mrs. Pearson, of Wheaton, died Sunday in a Carol Stream nursing home. "She had a talent for bringing the right people together," her daughter, Nancy Mantz, said. "She could recognize an individual's skills and match people. And, when she did, projects would happen.
