Several of them testified during the sixth day of hear ings being conducted by Wil liam P. Flynn, public vehicle license commissioner, to determine how many taxicab licenses are required in the city. Alfred Kamin spoke as at torney representing the Team sters joint council No. 25; local 777, Taxicab -Drivers union; and local 727, Teamsters union. Hits Additional Licenses We believe that additional licenses cannot be issued," he said, "without a harmful effect on wages and conditions of employment in the taxi industry." Kamin bitterly assailed a Northwestern university report recommending that li censes not be limited and that city control over fares be terminated.

Among those who told of linion benefits were Ray Schoessling, president of the Teamsters joint council, and Robert Marcov, recording sec retary of local 777, which represents drivers of the two major companies, Yellow Cab company and Checker Taxi company. Seek Former Permits Flynn disclosed that las Wednesday Yellow, Checker and Public Taxi Service com pany formally applied for 1,096 licenses, the they gave up under the con tract cab ordinance in 1937 But the applications made clear the companies wanted the licenses only if it is de cided, against their recom mendations, that additiona licenses are to be issued. Of 3,000 licenses under the contract ordinance, Yellow and Checker hold 2,595, and independents 405. The Illinois Supreme court has held in valid the 740 licenses issued to war veterans after World War II.
