Mid. 1136. i BY QUENTIN POPE Chfraeo Tribune I'ress Service! SUVA, Fiji. July 21 By air rnail With the East Indian population of the Fiji Islands now outnumber- ng tho nalivfs, and still reKardinsr thf-msHves rather as a province of Mother India than as loyal Ftjlans, the native chiefs are agitating to have them all sent home. Brought here first 70 years ago to provide plantation labor for British proprietors, the Indians now number 117.000 as opposed to 115,000 native Fijians and 5,000 Europeans.

Release of the Indians from their labor servitude In 1920, advances in medicine, fall In the infant death rate and increase in the birth rate have pushed up the Indian population to the point where the administration figures that in 25 years there will be 2G7.000 Indians and 187.000 Fijians. Besides rising in numbers, the Indians hive grown in economic significance. Today 97 of every 100 growers in the sugar industry are Indians. They play major -roles in the raising of every cash crop except copra. They dominate the fields of transport, clothes manufacturing, storekeeping and entertainment.

They are active in finance. They have become the wealthiest community here. Slake JVIoney on Yanks flood of American war time dol- lars into their own pockets, cashed in on services and souvenirs. Some Hindu farmers' families made So00 a month doing laundry for American soldiers. Whereas only one Indian corporation paid income tax in 1936, eight paid taxes last year.

Whereas only 35 Indians paid 'income taxes 10 years ago, 625 received tax demands in 1945. This advance in wealth has been aided by a government policy which has held living costs for the Indian laborer down to 69 per cent over 1939 levels, according to administration figures, whereas wages of these workers has been stepped up 73 per cent. The Indians have only recently shown any desire to think of themselves as Fijians first and Indians second. They have been tenacious of their mother tongues, their ancient customs, their separate schools. So dissimilar are the two races in out look that old inhabitants can recall only two cases of mating between Fijian and Indian.

Fail to Join Army Fijians nurse a new resentment against the Indians because of their failure to help defend the homeland during the war. When Gov. Mitchell asked for 1,000 Fijian' fighting men in-November, 1942, the chiefs quick ly furnished him with four times that number. Fijians raised three combat battalions and two battalions of labor troops. Of the 25,000 natives over 18 years of age, 13,000 were in uniform.

The Indians furnished not one unit for battle. 26 TRAITORS OF CHINESE ARMY SHOT TO DEATH SHANGHAI, Aug. 6 Tuesday (JP) 'Twenty-live 'men and one wora-j an, all members of the Chinese army who turned traitor during the late stages of the Sino-Japanese war, died before a firing squad Monday in the biggest mass execution in Shanghai since the Japanese occupation. Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek had approved the sentences. The condemned, roped together and taken to the execution ground undex strong escort, were made to dig their own graves before they were trussed, lined up and shot.

All met death with passivity. The executions were unheralded, but thousands gathered to watch. Included among the condemned were Van Lee-Long, who became sect ionnl chief of the puppet secret police during the Japanese occupa tion. YOUNG BURGLAR SHOT DEAD AS HE JUMPS IN FLIGHT Scranton, Aug. 5 (JP) A shot from a policeman's pistol today killed a 16 year old burglar In midair as he jumped from a second floor balcony of a dentist's home, shouting defiance.

The boy was identified as George Griflin North Scranton, arter his father telephoned police to report his son was missing. Neighbors saw the boy crawling into a basement window and sum- moned police. Policeman Frank Golden tired the shot. $WEET op you rHOTQ. PEAR MR A 1 8-4 OBITUARIES John W.

AGOfJIff snoniivea demonstration siageu uy peasants and workers before the parliament building. The official Anatolia news agency said President Ismet Inonu had Instructed Recep Peker, a veteran militarist long prominent in the government, to form a new cabinet. Until the new cabinet is completed the present government will con tinue to function, the announcement said. Rebuff to President The demonstration before the parliament building broke out late in the evening after the new national assembly, in its first meeting, had reelected President Inonu to another TfS" TZlfTTl t. carrying sabers rode into the throng massed between the parliament building and the Ankara hotel, and the demonstrators quickly fell back.

Inonu's reelection demonstrated the growing political division in Turkey. Whereas his previous election had been unanimous, the recently created Democratic party's 62 deputies voted solidly against him today and then sat in stony silence while pro-government deputies greeted the man they had renamed as president. Never in the history of the Turkish republic has a chief executive been so rebuffed. Follow Protest Meetings Tonight's disorders came on the heels of a series of protest meetings thruout the nation against what the Democratic party which came into being with the lifting of the ban against opposition parties last De cember contended were irregularities -in the government sponsored elections two weeks ago. Democratic party spokesmen In sisted they won far more than the 62 seats given Democrats in the official returns.

It is expected the party will protest the election before the new parliament. Inonu, the spokesman said, actually "wa sdefeated in Ankara. Consequently the Democratic party refused today to acknowledge him as president. However, the government election returns listed Inonu as having received more votes than other candidates in Ankara province. FEDERAL PANEL HOPES TO AVERT PULLMAN STRIKE Two c611ege professors and a state supreme court judge yesterday opened hearings in Morrison hotel in an attempt to bring a strikeless solution to the difficulties between the Pullman company and the Order of Railway Conductors.

The panel, appointed by President Truman, includes Dr. I. L. Sharf-man of the economics department, University of Michigan; Judge Robert G. Simmons of the Nebraska Supreme court, and Dr.

Walton H. Hamilton, professor of public law at Yale university. Conductors originally called for a strike to start tomorrow, but appointment of the board forestalled the tieup of the nation's sleeping cars at least until Sept. 27. The board yesterday heard opening state- ments by both sides and today will begin taking testimony from the conductors.

Hearings must be completed and the results must be given to the President by Aug. 27. 'MUSSOLINI PANTS PEDDLED BY THE ACRE rChicftiro Trlbnne Press Servicel' ROME, Italy, Aug. 5 The newest racket being used to fill fascist coffers is the sale of bits of Mussolini's pants. The body of the late dictator was stolen several months ago from jMusocco cemetery in Milan.

Some of lhose implicated in the affair nave ben arrested and have said Ithar the Irnnsers were taken from sold. It is known that $111 was paid for one patch of a few square inches. The inevitable has occurred. Pants materials of all shades and textures are being offered on the black market as genuine Mussolini relics. II duce was capaciously built below the belt but enough square acreage of material is being peddled to clothe a fleet of blimps.
