14 TSpecial Lush green plants cover thousands of acres of rich Aroostook county potato lands around here, and you'll drink many a spud to dear old Maine winter. With grain distilling curtailed so that more grain can be sent to Europe, Aroostook and other potato growing areas have leaped to the fore as producers of potato alcohol, which the liquor industry must use in blending whiskies. Since April, a new and penetrating aroma of roast potatoes has hung over the part of Caribou nearest the recently established plant of Clarke Distillers, largest potato alcohol distillery in America. Runs Day and Night A 120 man crew keeps the plant running day and night, turning out its peak capacity of 10,000 gallons each 24 hours under the scrutiny of seven internal revenue inspectors. Uncle Sam's tax cut is $9 a gallon.

Caribou's natives are of two minds about caribooze the name they give the potent product of their soil. About half are tickled pink over the new income the area will derive from 120 jobs and a market in which they can unload all their potatoes at a present price of around 50 cents for each 100 pounds. That cooks down to about a gallon of alcohol. The other half both detests the smell and doubts that any lasting good can come to Caribou from an enterprise deriving its main reve nues from liquor. Fear for Beauty of River Others protest that the messy mash discharged from the plant is spoiling the beauty of the sylvan, willow fringed Otter river for some distance below Caribou.

The plant is near the river. Maine in the next month or so is expected to harvest a record 75 million bushels of potatoes, of which about 78 per cent will be in Aroostook county. When carload shipments reach the distillery the potatoes enter a sluice and are washed down into the dis tillery. After being cooked under pressure the liquid is run off thru a cooling system to vats where malt is introduced. This turns the po tato starch into sugar.

The liquid runs on into still larger fermenting vats, where yeast is added. After a stay of 40 to 72 hours it is drawn into the stills and heated to the vaporizing point, emerging as 190 proof alcohol, requiring only di lution down to a potable 100. CITY TO UN STEP MASTS TO KEEP BRIDGES SHUT The city hopes to make available within a month a derrick that can be used to unstep masts of small sailing vessels to permit them to travel up the river without bridges being raised, City Harbor Master William J. Lynch said yesterday. Thru an agreement between the city and yachting associations and shipyard owners, small craft with high masts normally have not gone up the river during periods of heavy traffic.

Recently, however, a small vessel was forced to go up the river for repairs at 11 a. with the result that bridges had to be raised and traffic disrupted. Ward of the Criminal court yesterday gave police until 6 p. m. today either to book or discharge Charles Tex Whalen, 21, of 3852 Odell ex- convict who admitted he was the brains of the green car bandit gang. Whalen's attorney, John O. Wag-1 ner, who appeared in court on a petition for a writ of habeas corpus, pleaded that police had had three days to question Whalen, but Irving Park detectives requested more time in an effort to learn the whereabouts of two missing members of the gang, Richard Schultz, 16, of 3742 New England and Tony Kapsis, 17, of 3859 Ottawa av.

They are sought for questioning about the murder of Lewis Zeinz, 27, a veteran, in the Evans field section of the forest preserve a week ago. Arraignment of a fourth member of the gang, John Follmann, 17, of 3846 Ottawa av, on five robbery, charges was continued yesterday to Sept. 3. Irving Park police said Whalen had admitted 11 robberies, but denied participation in the Zeinz holdup-slaying. Girlt 11, Fatally Hurt in Fall from Street Car Patricia Blank, 11, of 2733 N.
