OBITUARIES Associated Press BRUSSELS Mal Waldron, whose childhood dreams of becoming a great pianist took him through the golden age of jazz alongside such legends as Billie Holiday, Charles Mingus and John Coltrane, has died, his manager said Tuesday. He was 77. Mr. Waldron enjoyed his heyday during the 1950s and early working first in New York before moving to Germany. He gained popularity as a performer throughout Europe and in Japan.

Mr. Waldron died Monday of complications from cancer, his manager, Rob Leurentop, said. He played his last concert in Lille, France, only two weeks ago. His last recording, released in October, was called More Twice married, Mr. Waldron is survived by seven children, Leurentop said.

He was easily recognizable in his later years for his mop of white hair and elegant posture. He became Billie last accompanist in the 1950s, and played alongside her until she died in 1959. He also played in the bands of Mingus and Coltrane. His most famous ballad, was originally written for Coltrane. It became a jazz classic, covered by musicians including Stan Getz and Anthony Braxton.

Mr. Waldron was born in New York City in 1925 and began studying piano when he was 8 years old. His focus quickly turned from classical music to modern jazz. MAL WALDRON, 77 Pianist who worked with Holiday, Mingus Mal Waldron Associated Press WASHINGTON John L. McLucas, former secretary of the Air Force and head of the Federal Aviation Administration in the 1970s, died Sunday.

He was 82. Mr. career in aviation and space spanned many years in government and the private sector. As president in the late 1960s of Mitre a non-profit corporation founded to work on national defense problems, he fostered business connections with several government agencies. He was appointed undersecretary of the Air Force in 1969, served during the Nixon and Ford administrations as Air Force secretary from 1973 to 1975 and then was FAA administrator until 1977.

He previously worked at the Defense Department and was named assistant secretary general for scientific affairs at NATO Headquarters in Paris. After leaving government, Mr. McLucas held various senior positions at Communications Satellite created by Congress in 1962 and later acquired by Lockheed Martin. He retired in 1985 as executive vice president. Most recently, he was board chairman of the Arthur C.
