123456 12 CHICAGO TEMPO By Howard Reich Tribune arts critic For roughly half a century, the magnificent Chicago bassist Malachi Favors was a catalyst for new ideas in jazz, influencing generations of players and anchoring one of the most widely esteemed bands in the musical avant-garde, the Art Ensemble of Chicago. By the mid-1950s, Mr. Favors had become a leading figure in Chicago music, recording with the innovative pianist Andrew Hill, performing with bands led by the visionary reedist Roscoe Mitchell and, in 1961, joining pianist Muhal Richard groundbreaking Experimental Band. That ensemble set the stage for the emergence, in 1965, of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), a Chicago collective that helped redefine the jazz avant-garde. But it until when Mr.

Favors joined with Mitchell, reedist Joseph Jarman, trumpeter Lester Bowie and, soon after, drummer Don Moye in the Art Ensemble became a potent force in new music. Served in the Army Signal Corps 1942-1945 in the 896th Signal Company Depot Aviation. In 1942 he did radar training at the secret camp in McDowell Grove Forest Preserve, Naperville. Received the Bronze Star from the 9th Air Force for field development of the automatic bomb release radio controlled system in France, 1944. He worked for the Bell System for 40 years on a variety of military and domestic projects. He contributed to the design and implementation of a state wide mobile radio system in Illinois between 1947 and 1951.

He was best known for his work as head of the toll digital project management and applications department where he directed the development of the 4ESS switch, the world first toll digital switching system. The Lansens built a home in Cape Coral, Florida, where they wintered from 1974 to 1982, when Cape Coral became their permanent home. Mrs. Lansen was active in church and community affairs in Indiana, Wisconsin, and Florida. She was a Lady Elk. In addition to her role as partner and friend to her husband, she was a devoted and encouraging mother to her children, who became a senior advertising executive, a senior industrial engineer, an attorney, and a neurosurgeon.
