123456 TRIBUNE 9 METRO oBITUARIES By Patrick Rucker Tribune staff reporter From a young age, Michael he had at least a 50-percent chance of being struck down by illness. His mother, Alice, was afflicted with the inherited disorder disease in her 30s. Before it finally took her life, she spent 15 years in a nursing home where she was often depressed and nearly helpless. Doctors could have determined if Mr. carried the killer gene, but he never wanted to get tested.

Instead he lived as if he already knew. On expeditions diving, climbing and rafting around the globe, Mr. never missed a chance to dare the devil. Last weekend, his life of adventure ended on an approach to Mt. Everest.

Mr. 39, who lived and worked in Chicago for several years, died Sunday, May 1, after falling into a crevasse while trying to scale the highest peak. Born in Oswego, N.Y., Mr. was a boy when his 36- year-old mother first showed symptoms of the nerve-wasting disease. In just a few years she grew irritable, clumsy and forgetful to the point where she could no longer look after her children.

His mother died in 1995, an event that seemed to only heighten his thirst for adventure.

After he saved enough money, he would vanish for a month or two. worked the odd jobs to make some quick cash, stick around for a while and then plan a big said his roommate at the time, Jeff Rosenthal.

Although Mr. know whether he carried the dreaded gene, disease shaped his life. He scaled Mt. Kilimanjaro and peaks in the Himalayas, explored Central American reefs and enjoyed skydiving around Chicago in case he was ever robbed of good health, his family said. But he also confronted the disease on his own terms when he could, helping to raise funds for research to fight the disease.

While working as a bartender on the Spirit of Chicago, Mr. met Rebecca woman who would become his longtime companion and mate on his adventures. For the last eight years, Mr. and Stodola were committed to one another, buthe resisted making future plans, she said. did not have a 5-year plan or even a 2-year she said.
