123456 TRIBUNE 11 By Kate Gibson Special to the Tribune From the mid-1960s to the late 1970s, Charles J. Bolek was an outgoing and influential Des Plaines alderman credited as a driving force behind years of expansion at the Lattof YMCA in Des Plaines. was boisterous, but there anything that he do within maybe beyond a friend or to do a service for a said Tom Koplos, who served on the City Council with Mr. Bolek, who was an alderman from 1965 to 1977. He also was acting mayor for 10 months beginning in August 1976.

Mr. Bolek, 79, died of a heart attack Sunday, Dec.7, in Holy Family Medical Center, Des Plaines. Born to immigrant parents in Chicago, Mr. Bolek grew up in Cicero. He attended Burnham Elementary School and Morton High School, where he played football and from which graduated in 1942.

He enlisted in the Army Air Forces after high school, serv- ing during World War II in the Pacific Theater. After two years in the service and two years in the reserves, he went to college and earned a degree in chemistry in 1950 and a degree in education in 1952 from Michigan State University in East Lansing. Mr. Bolek taught for two years in Michigan and two years in in the Glenbrook school system in Glenview. He then switched to business, starting up and serving as president of Jeco Industries in Barrington, a window manufacturing company.

He sold the company when he retired five years ago. Active in numerous clubs and fundraising efforts, Mr. Bolek chaired the Finance Committee while on the City Council. was very, very tight with the purse said Koplos. you went in and asked for an increase in your budget, the answer was no, but if you could document the long- term savings, then there was no problem convincing Mr.

Bolek was selected to fill in as mayor in 1976 after the previous mayor resigned because majority of us thought he was the most qualified to take said Koplos. Mr. Bolek lost his bid for election to that post. While on the board of directors at the Lattof YMCA for 27 Bolek helped raise funds and plan expansions that included two pools, an adventure center, a field house and a gymnasium. He also served was on the board of Holy Family Medical Center from 1979 to 1985.

Never married, Mr. Bolek ate virtually all of his meals at restaurants and was known to park close to the restaurant entrance and honk his horn until someone opened the door. invented valet service in the his nephew Barry Bolek joked. I was a little kid, he would show up at Christmas and honk the horn, then wait for the door to open before he got out of the Survivors also include a brother, Joseph, and a sister, Blanche Grimes. BRINKMAN, 83 Vernon C. Brinkman, 83, a World War II veteran who worked as a railroad machinist for 40 years, died of congestive heart failure Sunday, Dec. 7, in his Palos Hills home. Mr. Brinkman was born in Chicago and raised on the South Side, where he graduated from Tilden Tech High School.

He went to work for New York Central Railroad, which later became Penn Central Railroad, as a machinist fixing engines. He shipped off for war in 1943, just after marrying his wife, Laurretta. He served as an Army platoon sergeant in the Pacific. He returned to Chicago and his job on the railroad in 1945. In 1949 he and his wife moved to Palos Hills, and he joined the North Palos Fire Protection District, retiring as deputy chief of the volunteer unit in 1986.

For the past 20 years, he was a member of Palos Hills New Horizon Club, a club for se- niors.He built his own house and grew enough vegetables to share with the whole neighborhood. was very giving of his daughter Jean said. helped four kids go to college, he supported us in everything we wanted to do and he was always there whenever we needed his son Charles said. In addition to his wife of 60 years and his son and daughter, Mr. Brinkman is survived by two other daughters, Judy and Pam Giera; two sisters, Laverne Slukis and Pearl Niccum-Hoffman; and a grandson.

Visitation is scheduled from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Palos-Gaidas Funeral Home, 11028 S. Southwest Highway, Palos Hills. A service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

JANET T. EDEN, 78 An artist whose work was displayed in area restaurants, Janet T. Eden, 78, turned to jewelry-making in her later years. been a goldsmith the last few said her daughter Jill. her 70s, down in the basement with her blow torches, lighting her cigarettes, melting the gold and pouring Mrs.

Eden died of lung cancer Sunday, Dec. 7, in her Des Plaines home, where she and her husband had lived since 1950. Family members said Mrs. Eden is best known for work crafted in the 1960s and shown and sold through Signature Creations, her Elgin studio. mom needed to add to the income here, so she invented these little villages with blinking said her daughter.

was selling them all over Chicago; Italian restaurants bought them, Born in Chicago, she graduated from Senn High School and took classes at the Art Institute of Chicago. She enrolled at Purdue University in West Lafayette, where she met John David Eden. They married in 1944. Her husband enlisted in the military, and Mrs. Eden moved back to Chicago, where she worked in hospitals, said her daughter Polly Jensen.

After the war, the couple went on a honeymoon and moved to Des Plaines. In addition to her sculpted villages and jewelry, Mrs. Eden made boots from leather and wove tapestries. used to go to the farms to get wool directly from the sheep, then spin and dye said Jill Eden. Until recently, Mrs.

Eden would drive to Woodstock every week to help care for her 102-year-old mother, Alice Rossiter, her daughters said. In addition to her husband, mother and two daughters, other survivors include a son, John; a sister, Marilyn Arnold; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial gathering will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in Hills Funeral Home, 745 Graceland Des Plaines. A service will follow in the funeral home.

WALLACE EUGENE FELLOWS, 74 AKorean War veteran and former plumbing inspector for the City of Elgin, Wallace Eugene Fellows liked socializing at the local VFW post and playing golf with his brother, Herbert. was a ball of fire and a lot of fun, very sharp and said his brother. A longtime resident of Elgin, Mr. Fellows, 74, died of asbestos lung disease Friday, Dec. 5, at home in Naples, where he moved after retiring in 1991.

Born in Elgin, he graduated from Elgin High School in 1947 and worked as a apprentice for J.L. Wagner Plumbing Piping in St. Charles. He served in the Marines during the Korean War, and when he returned went to work for his heating and plumbing business. When his father, Virgil, died in 1981, Mr.

Fellows took over his job as the plumbing inspector. A few years later, he went to work for Elgin School District 46, retiring when he was 62. Other survivors include two sons, Edwin and Richard; one daughter, Deniece; two sisters, Betty Peabody and Carol Shear; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Amemorial service will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 330 Griswold Elgin.
