Howard successful 1980 bid for alderman of 50th Ward, she became his office manager. While serving as president of ERA Illinois, she also was president of the Loop chapter of the Older League of Illinois. In 1994she left that post and became a lobbyist for the AARP. Other survivors include another son, Michael; and six grandchildren. A memorial service will begin at 6:30 p.m.

In 1997 actor Jimmy Stewart died at 89 in his home in Beverly Hills, Calif. In 1999 former Northwestern University basketball coach Ricky Byrdsong, 43, was shot to death as he walked with his family in victim of a three-day shooting rampage by white-supremacist Benjamin Smith.
