10 CHICAGO TRIBUNE BUSINESS SECTION3 By Patricia Trebe SPECIAL TO THE TRIBUNE Robert E. Wooten Sr. was just a teenager when he was forced to spend 19 months in a hospital to battle a lung disease. Isolated from friends, family and his church, he vowed that once he was released, he would find a way to minister to others who were left behind. Today his vision and dream lives in the Wooten Choral Ensemble, which rehearses once a week at Beth Eden Baptist Church in Chicago, where it started 58 years ago.

The 60-plus voice choir performs not only at the worship twice a month, but also across the country in other churches, hospitals, nursing homes and prisons. Mr. Wooten, 78, of Chicago, died of kidney cancer Thursday, March 27, in his home. Today his son Robert Wooten Jr. is director of his choral ensemble and continues with his philosophy.

Mr.

Wooten was born in Chicago the fourth of five sons, and his mother died when he was a young boy. His father remarried and the family grew up in Beth Eden Baptist Church. While at Morgan Park High School, he took piano lessons and started the Morgan Park Crusaders choral group. During his hospital stay he continued his studies, and after his release he graduated in 1949. That year, he started the Wooten Choral Ensemble and studied accounting at Cortez Peters Business College in Chicago.

However, he went on to receive a bachelor of science degree in music education from the Chicago Musical Conservatory in 1956. Later that year, he married Frances, who was a member of the choral ensemble. Mr. Wooten was hired as a music teacher by the Chicago Public Schools and started at an elementary school before he joined Parker High School as choral director. There he led the school to numerous awards and distinctions.

He moved from the classroom to the office of assistant principal at Parker High School and later was administrator in the human relations department for the Chicago Board of Education for six years. He then moved to the former District 18 in Chicago and became district administrator in 1976 until that department was closed. He was mentor to teachers at DuSable High School until he retired in 1994. While he maintained his teaching career, Mr. Wooten also served as minister of music at Beth Eden since 1949 and director of music at Greater Harvest Baptist Church in Chicago since 1952.

He stepped down from Wooten Choral Ensemble and Beth Eden in 1999. was one of our said Craig Jenkins, pastor of Beth Eden Baptist Church. Mr. Wooten received a of science in music education from Roosevelt University in 1968. He also received an honorary doctorate of music from the Virginia College and Seminary in 1983.

Other survivors include his daughter, Carol Lynne Wooten McDaniel; another son, John Darryl; a brother, Ernest; and four grandchildren. A viewing will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday in Trinity United Church of Christ, 400 W. 95th Chicago, followed by a visitation and musical tribute, which will begin at 5 p.m.

Mr. Joseph was the head of a group that in 1968 bought Hunter Publishing, where he had been an executive vice president. The company published trade magazines for the automotive industry, and under Mr. leadership expanded with publications for insurance, fuel oil sales and mining as well as Pro Quarterback, a magazine that covered football. Mr.

Joseph sold the business in the mid-1980s. The son of Lebanese immigrants, Mr. Joseph was born in Iowa and grew up in Toledo, Ohio, which has a substantial population of Lebanese and Syrian-Americans. Among his pals in that ethnic community was Danny Thomas, who went on to fame as an actor and star of the television show Room for In the late 1950s, Thomas created American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities to raise money for a chil- hospital. He solicited many of his old friends, including Mr.

Joseph, who at that time was in Toledo working in advertising for an automotive after-market firm. Mr. Joseph got on board and enlisted his children to go door-to-door to ask neighbors for money. remember stacking nickels, dimes and pennies on our ping-pong table after going around and asking people to contribute for a hospital that exist George Joseph said. Joseph was driven by a need to help Lebanese-Americans make a contribution to their new country, and his belief that it was essential to combine research with treatment for children without regard to their ability to pay, Moses said. Mr. Joseph had graduated from the University of Toledo and was a year into law school when World War II inter- vened. During the war he was Naval lieutenant in the Pacific. Mr.

Joseph earned a reputation as a compelling speaker during his early career in automotive advertising. His interest in industry issues led him into publishing and he continued to speak at industry and philanthropic events through the years. He was active in the Anti- ochian Orthodox Church and a former chairman of the An- tiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. An expert on Middle East issues, Mr. Joseph was close to a number of politicians, to whom he would offer advice on matters concerning the region.

A hunter since his boyhood in Toledo, Mr. Joseph traveled the world in search of exotic game, going after animals in exotic locales including Africa, Tibet and Mongolia. He built an addition to his home to hold his collection of mounted animals, which include a full-size buffalo.
