Ruger, an American gun designer who founded Sturm, Ruger the largest U.S. firearms manufacturer, died July 6 in Prescott, Ariz. The company, which Ruger started in 1949 with Alexander McCormick Sturm, is best- known for its Western-style revolvers, but it also makes target pistols, police handguns, rifles and shotguns. It had net sales last year of $174 million.

Mr. Ruger, 86, who was chairman emeritus, had a hand in the design and styling of all the weapons his firm produced. In 1938, Mr. Ruger came up with the early designs for what eventually became a light machine gun for the Army. By 1949, he had perfected a design for a automatic pistol and started making guns, helped by a $50,000 loan from Sturm.

That year, he joined the National Institutes of Health, where he was responsible for a communicative-disorders program for three years.

He received the United States Public Health Service Commendation Medal for developing a program for communication problems resulting from stroke, his family said. In 1978, Dr. Hanson moved to Los Angeles, where he served on the faculty of the University of California until 1989.
