She will be missed. Sign Guestbook at chicagotribune.com/obituaries CENTER, NANCY Nancy Stirton Center, passed away peacefully at the loving home of her daughter Nov. 18, 2007. She was born in Chicago on Sept. 9, 1919 to Robert C.

and Grace (Montgomery) Stirton. Nancy, gifted with a brilliant mind and ready wit, was a and encyclopedia of art and literature. Had she been born a generation later, she might have been a fine professional photographer. She attended the Latin School and graduated from Smith College. After college, she worked in advertising until the start of World War II when she joined the Navy where she was commissioned a Lieutenant.

As a Naval signals officer, she was the second person on American soil to learn the war in Europe was over. She and her colleague had worn themselves out celebrating by the time the rest of America got the news. After the war, she returned home to Chicago and soon her dear friends Carol and Dave Watrous set her up with a balding go-getter who worked at the Parker Pen Company. She and Allen were married April 23, 1948 and immediately set about contributing to the post-war baby boom. Douglas Allen was born in Janesville, Wisconsin March 14, 1949 and followed almost immediately by Dean Montgomery on March 18, 1950.

Having no experience in any of her new roles, she spent the next few years learning to cook and wash diapers, keeping Doug from murdering the little interloper, and moving the family back to Winnetka. Eventually, she found time to have Laurie Ellen, born Dec. 4, 1955. Nancy loved all her children very much, but Laurie, with her sunny disposition and self confidence, proved to be her special joy. Nancy spent the next years keeping house, nurturing her family and becoming a pretty good cook.

Fortunately, she never figured out which miscreant hid the broccoli and brussel sprouts behind the dining room radiator. She especially enjoyed the outings to their beloved Hattie Lake cabin and sharing it with friends and her nieces and nephews. Once the children were raised and out in the world, she devoted much time to volunteer work at Evanston Hospital. She also pursued her enthusiasm for art and became a fair painter. Allen and Nancy traveled extensively and their home was filled with art from nearly all corners of the world.

When Allen retired from Motorola in 1972, they moved to the Rancho Bernardo area of San Diego and she continued her volunteer work at Pomerado Hospital. After death in 2005, she moved to Massachusetts to live with Laurie and Chip, where she found much love and many pets. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and older sisters Roberta Beckwith and Jean Howard. She is survived by her three children, their spouses William "Chip" Kilgore and Kathy Center, grandchildren Ashley and Stephanie Kilgore, Amy Center Cory and husband Jeff, Ben Center and wife Jami, Adam Center, and great- grandchildren Noah Cory and Molly, Zoe and Lilly Center, and nieces and nephews she loved like her own. The family will hold a private interment at Memorial Park in Skokie, IL at a later date.

Nancy would like for anyone so inclined to make a contribution to the Chicago Abused Women Coalition (cawc.org).
