Fischer, 85, of Carol Stream and formerly of Wheaton, who served on the Board of Missions and in many other capacities for College Church in Wheaton and was a descendant of Wheaton founder, died Sunday, Oct. 27, in Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield following a stroke. Mr. Fischer was born in New York City.He was 5 years old when his father died, and he, his two brothers and mother were invited by his family to live with them in Wheaton.

She said Mr. paternal great-grandfather was Jonathan Blanchard, who founded Wheaton College in 1860. to Wheaton was like coming home for my said Susan Fischer. was as if he was given the chance to spend his childhood where he was always intended to grow Mr.

Fischer attended Wheaton public schools and graduated from Wheaton College in 1938. He then worked for Cuneo Press in Chicago for 10 years, a tenure interrupted by two years in the Navy in World War II. He then became a production manager with Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. He worked there for 30 years, until his retirement at age 62. While a young man, he began teaching Sunday school in College Church, where he met his future wife, Ruth McBride, a fellow teacher.

They were married for 58 years, until her death in 1999. Through the years, Mr. Fischer held many responsibilities at College Church. He taught Sunday school at various age levels for 20 years, served on the Board of Missions for another 20 years, including seven years as treasurer and nine years as chairman. He also served on the Board for three terms, including one year as chairman, and for 10 years was chairman of Keenagers, the senior citizens group.

According to his daughter, Mr. Fischer was the oldest con- tinuous member of College Church, having attended since age 5. church and his religion were very important to she said. was like a second family in many Following his retirement, Mr. Fischer became involved in many volunteer programs, working as a correspondent for Bibles for the World, counselor for Billy telephone ministry, tax counselor for AARP in the Wheaton Senior Citizens Center and book reviewer for the Evangelical Church Library Association.

He and his wife spent a year on the Caribbean island of Curacao managing a mission bookstore. mother and father had nothing but wonderful memories of their time in Susan Fischer said. was one of the best years of their A resident of Windsor Park Manor in Carol Stream for the last several years, Mr. Fischer was active in the retirement resident council, serving at times as treasurer and president. Other survivors include four more daughters, Dorothy Hawthorne, Jeanne Borden, Deborah Fischer Johnson and Marilyn; two brothers, Charles and Robert; and eight grandchildren.

Hill, born on North Side, was a graduate of the University of Illinois, where she earned a degree in journalism. She was a member of Alpha Phisorority and a lifetime member of the University of Illinois Alumni Association. After college, she wrote for Suburban Life, then earned a teaching certificate from Northern Illinois University. She worked briefly as a substitute physical education teacher for the Riverside School District. She also played volleyball for Rich Port YMCA.

After raising her family, Mrs. Hill worked as an office clerk for Supply and Hardware Corp. Mrs. Hill loved to play the piano and enjoyed traveling to Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Alaska and Puerto Rico. led a very balanced, full lifethat allowed her to pursue many of her own said her daughter Pamela Shaver.
