He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Margot; his sister, Barbara (Sandy) McLanahan; six children, Margot (Jimmy) Augustin, Nora (Philippe) Feune de (Susie) Gallup, Sarah (R.V.) Ives, John (Gloria) Eddy and Chad (Amy) Eddy; and 14 grandchildren. Ken grew up in Winnetka where he graduated from North Shore Country Day School. Ken served in General MacArthur Honor Guard 46- 47). He attended Oberlin College and later graduated from Harvard College, Class of 52. Ken started his career with United Airlines and then enjoyed a 15-year career at the Leo Burnett Company, most notably as Account Executive supervising theKellogg brands.

Ken earned hisMaster Degree in Teaching from the National College of Education and enjoyed a second career as teacher at various north suburban schools, as well as business writing consultant. Ken retired to Salem, SC in 1988 and enjoyed golf, hisgrand- children, volunteering at local schools and Oconee Memorial Hospital, and singing in a local barbership chorus. Ken would like to be remembered as a family man and a solid teacher of young people. He will be laid to rest in a private family gathering at Oak Woods Cemetery in Chicago. Interment private. Info 630-231-1300. Sign Guestbook at chicagotribune.com/obituaries DIXON, LaVERNE A. Retired Judge LaVerne A. Dixon, a long-time resident first of Gurnee and then of Lake Forest, died August 10, in Westmoreland Nursing Center ofnatural causes.

He was94. Judge Dixon had been living in a retirement facility in VernonHills with his wife of 68 years, Ruth (neeOlsson) until moving into Westmoreland in June. Judge Dixon was born September 12, Warren Township High School and graduated from Lake Forest College. In order to earn the money necessary to attend law school, he served as Principal of Lake Villa Grade School and then taught social science atWarren Township High School. It was at Warren that he met his future wife who was alsoteaching there.

He attended John Marshall Law School in Chicago, graduating in 1935. JudgeDixon then commenced the full-time practice of law, interrupted only by service as a Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1942-1946. He formed a law partnership with Glenn K. Seidenfeld (now a retired Illinois Appellate Court Judge) with whom heprac- ticed until Judge Dixon was elected Probate Judge of Lake County in 1962. He was elected Judge of the Circuit Court of the 19thJudicial Circuit in 1964, ultimately serving as Chief Judge for five years.

He retired from the bench in 1976. During his legal career Judge Dixon contributed significantly to a number of civic and charitable organizations. In became the first Chairman of the Lake County Water District, serving in that role for seven years, and continued as a board member until 1962. Judge Dixon also served as a board member of the Village of Gurnee and of Warren Township High School for many years. He chaired the Lake County Red Cross and served as Village Attorney for a number of municipalities.

The American Legion awarded him a Citation of Recognition. Judge Dixon was a lifelong member and board member for many yearsof Gurnee Community Church and a member of Mason Lodge 127. In addition to his wife, Judge Dixon is survived by two sons, John of Chicago and Lowell (Mariclaire) of Lake Forest; a sister, Ethel Quedenfeld, and abrother, Robert (Jeanne), both of Gurnee; and four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Burial services have been held. A memorialservice for Judge Dixon will be held on Saturday, August 21, at 10 a.m.

In 1952 he met Paul Mandabach who also was in advertising, and the two men decided to start their own agency, which was housed for many decades in the Civic Opera House building. The agency focused on magazine advertising and developing marketing programs for its clients, which included Sara Lee, Proctor Gamble, Custom Food Products and Bloomfield Industries. It grew to have offices in New York, Ohio, Florida and California.
