Cumpton, passed away November 9, 2006, in Delray Beach, Florida as a result of respiratory failure. He had just celebrated his 85th birthday with his family. He was born in Annada, Missouri in 1921.

He rose from being the son of tenant farmers to become a leading partner in the international accounting firm of Peat Marwick Mitchell Co. He grew up on farms in Iowa and Minnesota, and as a young man headed for Chicago from Oskaloosa after earning $200 threshing in the fall harvest of 1939. There he enrolled in the Walton School of Business to learn accounting and business. He also courted and married his first wife, Betty Maddy, of Oskaloosa. After a brief period as a staff accountant and car hiker for Hertz Rental Car he joined the Army Air Corps to become a pilot.

Nearsightedness intervened, and he served proudly in Quartermaster Corps for the rest of WW II, eventually winding up in Okinawa. After the war, he pursued a career as a Certified Public Accountant, even though he had not had a full college education. After working on staff at a firm in Chicago, he co-founded his own firm, McNaughton Cumpton in 1951. The firm established itself as a specialist in the savings and loan field, and soon caught the attention of Peat Marwick Mitchell. The firms merged and in 1958 he was transferred to the executive offices in New York.

In the he became the national practice leader for the firm in savings and loans until his retirement in 1979. After his retirement he and Betty divided their time between their working farm in New Sharon, Iowa and their home in Boca Raton. In addition to farming and fishing pastimes, Jim devoted himself passionately to philanthropy and education. His significant interests were to support Lynn University and Boca Raton Community Hospital. A member of the Board of Trustees at Lynn, he generously supported the Conservatory of Music and the School of Aeronautics, including the donation of a grand piano and an airplane.

As a financial supporter of the Christian Fund, he had the distinction of being honored as the longest continual supporter for over 40 years. After Betty died in 1985, he met and married his second wife Elizabeth (Bette) Nettleton. Jim and Bette continued to live in Royal Palm until moving several years ago to Edge in Delray Beach. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Boca Raton and the Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club. Jim is survived by his wife Bette and his children Connie Christensen, of Brooklyn, N.Y.
