When the water temperatures drop to mid- to upper-50s, the crappiemove up to vertical structures and can be easily caught on live bait or plastics. With cooling water, crappiestart to feed more in preparation for winter.

Since more anglers fish shallow water and areas where structure is easily found, this can be your chance to catch more and bigger fish. Vertical structures are walls, barge pilings or trees that are in the water. all easy to find when fishing from a boat or off a bank. Most often the fish are very close to the structure and you need to place your bait right next to it. In my boat, approach the structure slowly.

If a little breeze, I try to drift to the spot instead of motoring to it. Silence is golden as fish on a structure can be easily spooked. Bank anglers should use a float, cast beyond the structure then slowly bring it close. Once along the structure use a shorter rod and fish vertically. If the fish are active, plastics will do just as well as live bait.

Most of the time we tell what the fishing will be like until we get on the water so it never hurts to bring a bucket filled with a couple of dozen crappie minnows. For plastics, I like nail tails, small grubs, or 1 1 2 inch tubes. White, red, black and chartreuse all work well but sometimes based on water clarity one will do better than the other. Small jigging minnows or spoons tipped with a waxworm will also work sometimes. fished several good crappie spots in the Chi- cagoland area.

The closest one is Lake Calumet. The lake has many barge pilings and walls made of wood or steel. Both attract fish. A key issue on barge pilings is that the outside is often deep, so a barge can float up to it, and the backside is shallower. Make sure you try all sides and at different depths.

As you first enter Lake Calumet, the east bank has several steel barge pilings. Try them all. caught crappieup to 14 inches there this time of the year. Another fun spot that has produced some of the biggest crappieis the Illinois River by Buffalo Rock State Park. about three miles upstream from the Starved Rock lock and dam.

There are hundreds of tree stumps in the wide water area across from the marina above the dam. This is good shallow water spot for crappie. The Three Rivers area, where the Kankakee, Illinois and Des Plaines rivers meet, is also a good place to explore. Shabbona Lakein DeKalb County is always a favorite. A bit farther are Lake Shelbyville, Evergreen Lakeand Rend Lake.

Whether from a boat or off the banks, if you can get close to some vertical structure, you will find crappiethis fall. The Padres have reportedly agreed to a list of Cubs minor league players to choose from as compensation for Hoyer and McLeod. Thus ends, at least for the time being, a bizarre saga that began when Cubs general manager Jim Hendry was fired in late August, one month after being told he was going to be dismissed and shortly before the Red Sox began an epic collapse that ultimately made Epstein expendable in the minds of ownership. It was a perfect storm of events for Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts, who went into the so-called search with a list of candidates he sure would be available, with Epstein at the top.

Epstein won two World Series with the Red Sox, in 2004 and 2007, and has the Boston pedigree the Cubs desired. As soon as Epstein arrives in Chicago, he will have some key personnel decisions to make concerning his front-office team and his roster. According to asource, he will not have any interference from Crane Kenney, whose title of team president will change to president of business operations. Kenney was not supposed to be involved in the hiring process, but the Ricketts family believes he was instrumental in helping lure Epstein, according to a source, assuring Epstein he would have total control of all baseball-related decisions. One of the valued Cubs employees Epstein will speak with soon is former Cubs pitcher Greg Maddux, who was an assistant to Hendry.

Maddux said Friday he is undecided on whether he will return to the team in 2012 because of family issues, even if Epstein wants him in the organization. interested in staying in Maddux said. last two years have been great. Most speculation has centered on Epstein choosing Ryne Sandberg as his next manager, though with Hoyer in the picture, everything is suddenly up in the air.

Rays bench coach Dave Martinez could be considered, along with former Red Sox manager Terry Francona and others Epstein and Hoyer admire. Padres manager Bud Black is not expected to be a candidate. Though it took a lot longer than he may have expected, Ricketts eventually got the man he wanted all along. Now the work begins to change the culture, with Epstein and Hoyer leading the charge.
