8 CHICAGO TRIBUNE BUSINESS SECTION3 Obituaries By Emily S. Achenbaum TRIBUNE REPORTER Norma Bernsohn was a teacher who stood out in minds, even after 40 years, a former student said. Joy Preble, now a high school English teacher and young-adult fiction writer living outside Houston, vividly remembers her 2nd- grade class with Mrs. Bernsohn at Brenneman Elementary School in Chicago in the early 1960s. Preble wrote a Thanksgiving play, and Mrs.

Mrs.

Bernsohn, who retired from teaching nearly 30 years ago, had been living in Evanston with her husband of 68 years, Joseph. Joseph Bernsohn, 94, said his wife loved children, and being a schoolteacher gave her a way to spend time with them and express her creative, free-thinking side. But her interest in education extended beyond the school day. In addition to teaching at several elementary schools, Mrs. Bernsohn helped develop a program that taught parents how to aid in their education at home. Discovering she wanted to teach not only children but future teachers, Mrs. Bernsohn received a degree in early child development from Northwestern University and began teaching aspiring educators at Malcolm and Truman Colleges in Chicago.

After retirement, she traveled to Mexico and Europe annually with her husband. often walk in Chicago and someone would stop her to say, remember me, but the reason I became a her husband said.
