For info, 630-834-1133 Sign Guestbook at chicagotribune.com/obituaries RAND, LOLA Lola Rand, language coach, teacher, and singer, passed away Friday, Aug. 19, 2005 at Weiss MemorialHospi- tal. The cause of death was abdominal obstruction caused by metastasis from ovariancancer. Lola Rand (Leokadia Rachella Faszyniak Rand) was born on Feb.

1, 1921, in Berlin, Germany. Her father, Jacob Faszyniak, was a high level diplomat in the Weimar Republic after World War I. Her mother, Marie Kurta, was an intellectual who had great interest in the arts. There were five languages spoken athome: German, French, Polish, Hebrew and Yiddish. Since Jacob Faszyniak post regularly took him to the Soviet Union, Russian was also heard at home.

At the age of 17, her father having passed away from heart disease, Lola, her mother, and older sister, Anna Nuschi escaped the rising anti-Semitism in Germany and settled in Chicago. In 1941, Lola married Alex Rand. After over 50 years of happy marriage, Alex preceded Lola in death in1998. They had no children. Lola career andlove was music.

She sang leading roles professionally in productions of Gilbert and Sullivan, no mean feat for someone of foreign birth. She was also a member of the newly formed Chicago Symphony Chorus. There she met and befriended Margaret Hillis, the Symphony Chorus Founder and Conductor. Miss Hillis asked her to coach the German and French for numerous works the chorus needed to prepare. Lola Rand also served on the faculty of the American Conservatory of Music, and her growing reputation as a coach led to assignments with the Grant Park Chorus, Music of the Baroque, and other choral ensembles.

She also coached numerous solo singers and conductors privately in her home. Many of these musicians went on to have both national and international careers. Among the many musicians she worked with were Thomas Wikman, Tom Peck, Christopher Bell, David Kuebler, Barbara Pearson, William Wahman, Maria Stader, Michael Cullin, Richard Boldrey, Patrice Michaels, Kurt R. Hansen, Theresa Brancaccio, Barbara Landis and Karen Brunssen. Later in her musical life, Lola found a new performing specialty: narration.

She performed Chanson de Bilitis of Debussy in its original version for piano, flute and narrator, rather than singer. There were other works by Schubert and Lizst that offered the same opportunities for her. Lola is survived by nieces and nephews, Barry Rand Elden of Chicago, George Fletcher of New York City, Paul Geller of Los Angeles, Carol Sorenson of Rolling Hills Estates, CA, Richard Berk of West Bloomfield, MI, Karen E. Rubin of New York City, Panna Lossy of Colati, CA, Rebecca Fletcher of New York City and David Lossy of Berkeley, CA; sister-in-law, Margaret Geller of Los Angeles; and cousins, Diane Kempler of Baltimore and Cilla Grossberg of Silver Springs, MD. Although she never had children, a number of Lola students became like family to her and her husband.
