They also alleged that Willowbrook police failed to properly investigate some incidents and were active participants in other acts of harassment. On Thursday, the Jameses, along with attorneys representing the police, village and the neighbors signed a single-page document declaring that claims in the lawsuit would be dismissed and that all parties would be responsible for their own costs. "I'm relieved that it's over for all parties involved," Mayor Robert Na-poli said Friday. Attorneys representing the village did not return a phone call seeking comment. Maxine James and her son signed the document pro se, which means they were representing themselves. Maxine's husband, Pinkney James II, said Friday night that his wife and son were still seeking legal advice and that the lawyer who had represented them was no longer involved. Pinkney James II, who was not a party to the lawsuit, declined to answer other questions.

Maxine James and their son could not be reached for comment The Jameses moved to Willowbrook in 2002 from Bellwood and said they faced years of racial discrimination in the predominantly white community. However, neighbors who lived on the cul-de-sac with the family told the Tribune in a story published earlier this year that Maxine James and her son had threatened them. Some neighbors said they were "terrified" to walk past the family's home. Napoli said Friday that Willowbrook police conducted an internal review after the James family made the allegations. But the mayor said he had not seen the review because it could have been evidence in the lawsuit and the mayor was also a potential witness.
