He was 70. Mr.

Savalas died in his suite at the Sheraton-Universal Hotel in Universal City, said his spokesman, Mike Mamakos. "Who loves ya, baby?" which Kojak muttered to fellow cops and assorted hoodlums, grew into the detective's signature and a national catch-phrase. "Kojak" broke into the top 10 rated shows in its first season, 1973-74, and Mr. Savalas won an Emmy as best actor in a dramatic series. The series lasted until 1978, setting the standard for gritty, realistic police shows such as "Hill Street Blues" and "NYPD Blue." Mr.

Savalas and his shaved head became indelibly identified as Lt Theo Kojak, and he remained grateful for the recognition. "I made 60 movies before 'Kojak' with some of the biggest names in the business, and people would still say, 'There goes he once said. Burt Lancaster provided Mr. Savalas' first important film role in 1961, as a police detective in "The Young Savages." The following year he appeared in Lancaster's "Birdman of Alcatraz" as a sadistic convict. The role won him an Academy Award nomination as best supporting actor.

Mr. Savalas became one of Hollywood's busiest character actors, often in hoodlum roles. His films Jews trying to escape Nazi Germany. He formed a newcomers club for Jewish people relocating to North Lawndale and helped many of them find work and, in some cases, an education in their new country. While working at the settlement house, he helped bring a mobile X-ray unit to the center to help diagnosis tuberculosis.

After the war, Mr. Heistad helped Japanese-Americans relocate to Chicago after they had been confined to internment camps. In 1946, Mr. Heistad moved his family to one of the city's toughest neighborhoods on the Near North Side and set up shop as executive director of the Olivet Community Center, 1441 N. Cleveland Ave.

Mr. Heistad helped bring, among other things, free legal counseling, Eva M. Borre Eva M. Borre, 99, of Evanston died Friday at St Francis Hospital in Evanston. A lifelong resident of Evanston, Miss Borre worked for more than 40 years as an operator and supervisor for Illinois Bell.
