Basil Assad, 31, eldest of the four sons of Syrian President Hafez Assad and presumed heir to the presidency; he had emerged two years ago as the expected successor to the 63-year-old president, who has ruled Syria with an iron grip since 1970; Jan. 21, when his speeding auto crashed.

Charles W. Mulaney, 91, retired vice president and director of Walgreen Co. who helped develop the firm into the nation's largretail drug chain; he retired in 1967; Jan. 17, in West Suburban Hospital, Oak Park. Fred Snowden, 57, first black coach of a major college basketball team; in Detroit guided a prep basketball team to an 89-5 record in five years as coach; he was recruited by Arizona to take over as coach in 1972; the appointment made him the second black coach of a Division I team and the first at a major college; his Wildcats won the Western Athletic Conference in 1976; Jan.

17, in Washington, of a heart attack. Edmund John Dehnert, 62, chairman of the Humanities Department at Truman College in Chicago; he was an honored musicologist and philosopher who was named the Outstanding Community College Faculty Member in the State of Illinois in 1987; Jan. 17, in Evanston Hospital, of cancer. Actor Telly Savalas, 70; famed for 'Kojak' TV role ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES -Telly Savalas, the gruff, bald-headed actor who became a television favorite as the lollipop-loving New York detective in the 1970s series "Kojak," died Saturday of prostate cancer. He was 70.

Mr. Savalas died in his suite at the Sheraton-Universal Hotel in Universal City, said his spokesman, Mike Mamakos. "Who loves ya, baby?" which Kojak muttered to fellow cops and assorted hoodlums, grew into the detective's signature and a national catch-phrase. "Kojak" broke into the top 10 rated shows in its first season, 1973-74, and Mr. Savalas won an Emmy as best actor in a dramatic series.

The series lasted until 1978, setting the standard for gritty, realistic police shows such as "Hill Street Blues" and "NYPD Blue." Mr. Savalas and his shaved head became indelibly identified as Lt. Theo Kojak, and he remained grateful for the recognition. "I made 60 movies before 'Kojak' with some of the biggest names in the business, and people would still say, 'There goes 1 99 he once said. Burt Lancaster provided Mr.

Savalas' first important film role in 1961, as a police detective in "The Young Savages." The following year he appeared in Lancaster's "Birdman of Alcatraz" as a sadistic convict. The role won an Academy Award nomination. as best Savalas supporting became one actor. of Hollywood's busiest character actors, often in hoodlum roles. His films Telly Savalas in 1989 include "Johnny Cool," "The New Interns," "The Greatest Story Ever Told," "Genghis Khan," "Battle of the Bulge," "The Slender Thread," "Beau Geste," "The Dirty Dozen," "The Scalphunters" and "Kelly's Heroes." Cast as Pontius Pilate in the 1965 film "The Greatest Story Ever Told," Mr.

Savalas was ordered by director George Stevens to shave his head. He considered the role a disaster, but he had found his screen persona. His first three marriages, to Katharine Nicolaides, Marilyn Gardner and Sally Adams, produced four children and ended in divorces. In 1984, he married Julie Howland. They had a son in 1985 and a daughter in 1987.

Wallace Heistad; helped Jews flee Nazi Germany Wallace Oliver Heistad, 82, who helped hundreds of Jews flee Nazi Germany and later helped interned Japanese-Americans relocate in Chicago, died Friday at East View Medical and Rehabilitation Center in Antigo, Wis. A native of Elderon, Mr. Heistad graduated from Northwestern University with bachelor's and master's degrees in education. Following graduation, Mr. Heistad worked as a high school teacher before accepting a position as director of the Marcy Center in the North Lawndale neighborhood in 1939.

During his tenure at the Marcy Center, Mr. Heistad, who was not Jewish, helped raise money for Nicholas A. Iosue By Teresa Wiltz TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER Nicholas A. Iosue, 69, of the Southeast Side died Friday at Ingalls Hospital in Harvey. A math teacher, Mr.

Iosue taught at Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago for 40 years. He was a veteran of World War II. He is survived by a brother and three sisters. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m.
