EDGEWORTH SCHOOL; A $4,000 It will be unwelcome and surprising news to many people to be informed that S. P. Balthus, late bookkeeper for IL E. lialleroy is Boom 9 Exchange Building, at the Union Stock-Yards, baa absconded with about $4,000 of his employers' money. Ile had been in the service of the firm about one year and a half, and had won their esteem and confidence.

He had many warm friends. too, who were attracted to him by his quiet and gentlemanly demeanor. It is said that domestic complications induced hire to become a defaulter. For some time he has been the proprietor of a boarding-house at Noe. 925 end 927 Wabash avenue.

In this btutineee be has alternated between profit and lona, but the latter waa the largest sum, when a trial balance was taken. But an this does not explain wby Beldine should steal 94,000. Re left the city a few days ago, taking that, rum with him, leaving behind him many debts unpaid. The has been given to the detectives, and it is believed that Beldine will be captured. June, M. We desire to call the epecial attention of the publie to VULCANIZED Runitga-Coarzn IRON Tune. Also, all the various Fittings required in connection with same, under FINLEY'S Patent, which we have been testing wit, entire success for the past two years. and are now ready to place on the market, thoroughlysatbilled that wherever it may be introduced for the passage of natural waters, either hot or cold. its merits will be acknowledged over either Galvanised bon or Lead Tubes, which are stow extensively used foe such purpose, and to which, in many localities, decided prejudice exists.

The absolute indestructibility of Vulcanized Rubberalse Ito purity for the purpose to which we adapt it, is so well known that comment is unnecessary. We append a letter from the celebrated Chemists, BOOTH A GARRETT, who have been kind enough to test the article for us. The price will he the same as for galvanized iron tube and fittings, subject to the most liberal trade discounts. We are also prepared to supply tongs designed especially for this article, so that it can be screwed up to ite place without injuring the coating. Asking your orders, Respectfully Koalas.

Thomas R. Gannterr. BOOTH GARRETT, Laboratory for Practical and ATIAIIIICAI Chemistry, 919 and 921 Chant-st. Rear of St- Stephen's Church, Tenth-st, below Market. Established in MN.

PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 12, 1873. Messrs. 1 Philadelphia. Dean Sins; We have made a earetul examination of your rubber-coated iron pipe, in order to determine he resistance to beat and oold, to steam, nature watere and have even extended our reaearches to acids, alkali, and burning gas.

We may mention that the coating is a similar compound to that constituting gems for holding anificial teeth, except that yours oonzains no mercury. It will boar a high degree of heat, ever3000 Fahrenheit, sa might be inferred from tte having been prepared at above 3000. It was not affected by boiling for several bouts in Schuylkill water. City gas passed through it for about three days appeared to have no effect on it. The rubber coating resisted firmly carbonic acid water, modrately dilute sulphuric and muriatic acids, and caustic potash solution.

Solutions of neutral salts have no action on it. Since the rubber coating exhibited such firm resistance to acid. alkali, salt, and beat, it is clear that. it will offer a still stronger resistance to all natural waters, in which some of the above ingredients are found in a lees exaggerated, e. in a more dilute state.

In fine, we congratulate you for finding a coating for Iron tubes, and articles of iron generally. which is so unusually resistant to anv of the usual agents of the chemist, and to those ordinary agents which do affect iron coated WI. Li other materials, in a grower or loss degree. Respectfully yours, BOOTH 4 GARRETT. The Senate Committee on Transportation held a meeting yesterday forenoon at 10 o'clock, at which Senators Windom, Chairman, Davis, Conover and wood were present also, Mr.

Nimmo, Secretary. and Mr. Bray ley, stenographer. The Railroad and Warehouse and the Canal Commissioners of Illinois were in attendance, but asked the Committee to postpone their hearing until to-day to give them time to prepare their statements. At the same time, the reprementatives of e.mi through freight lines, and tha leaning men in the elevator intereets will have a hearing.

Senator Conkling is expected to be present, unless the rumor of his appointment as Chief-Justice be true, in which case it is probable that be will take no further part in the work of the Committee. The met again in the afternoon, and queetioned Mr. R. Diefendorf, Agent of the Northern Transportation Company. Mr.

Diefendort stated that his Company was a through line to Oglensburgh by propeller, and thence by the Vermont Central Railroad to Boston or New York. Be was then questioned ins Citeit-man and members of the Committee se Q.What is the nature of the connection between the steamer line and the Railroad Company A.The latter is simply the outlet for the freight of the steamers. It is not directly connected with the Railroad Company, except that probably the officers of the Railroad Company own most of the stock of the Transportation Company. Q.How do you convey freight to the sea-board A. By propeller through the chain of lakes, the Welland Canal, and thence to Ogdensburgh, where we deliver to the railroad who carries it to Boston, Salem, Manchester, New York, or whatever point may be desired by the shipper.

We used to send some freight to Mon-trod, but have not since the connection with the railroad IMO made. Q.How do your rates to Ogdensburgh compare with those to Montreal A.Well, they vary somewhat. For instance, when the rate to Montreal on flour is 90 cents, ours to Ogdensburgh will be about 75 cents. Q.How do you regard the Welland Canalaii an embarrassment sir, as a very serious embarrassment. Q.In what way A.By reason of the lack of facilities and lack of water.

Our steamers lose a great deal of time in getting through, and they cannot carry their full cargoes. On the lakes they can take about 450 tons of freight, but through the canal they can only carry about 350 to ffh tons. We cannot even lighter our cargoes, owing to lack of water In the entrance to the canal at each end. They have been dredging, but for tile last two years the steamers cannot, as formerly, transfer a part of their cargo to the Welland Railroad and take it up at the other end of the canal. Neither would it pay, since they are passenger-steamers, and must run on time.

They cannot, like the sailing craft, wait their turn. Q.Are there any propellers not connected with any railroad A.Not now. There used to be a great many running wild, and carrying for any one who wished to ship, but now we deliver our freight to our own Company and receive theirs in return, giving a mutual preference to each other. there any combination between the various propeller linee A.No, air there is competition in plenty, but no combination. The rates vary from day to day, according to supply and demand.

We must fill up our steamers as soon as they are ready. They have no fixed rate lige tbe railroads. Q.What is your estimate of actual cost of traturportation of grain to Buffalo A.Well, it might be 4 or 5 cents per bushel, to which must be added insurance, cost of trimming, and transfer. It also depends somewhat on the up-freights. Nothing is made out of up-freight'.

anyhow. Q.What is the average cost of steamers. number of men, pay per day, A.Steamers coat about 000 each we have 20 in our line. They average 20 to 25 men in their crews, whose pay ranges from $100 per month to the Captains, to $20 per month to the men. The distance to Ogdensburgh to 1.365 Miles.

and the round trip takes seventeen days. Q.When the crops are large. do you charge ary higher rates than when they are small? A.It depends UDOR the demand for transportation. Of course, if we have a great rush for freights, we can charge more, but often the steamers carry at an actual loss. Q.In delivering grain in Boston, does any settled percentage of the freight charges belong to the railroad we calculate to get 50 pet cent, and the same goes to the Railroad Company.

Q.What is this division based upon, distance or time A.Neither, but upon the relative cost of transportation. After the above conversation, the members of the Committee seemed to think they had developed lieveral very important points, and Mr. Diefendorf departed. The other gentlemen who bad made engagements to meet the Committee were all apparently demoralized by the financial panic, and failed to make their appearance. Col.

D. C. Houston, of the United States Engineer came in, however, and gave an interesting account of the improvements on the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers. These improvements were commenced about sixteen years ago by the State of Wisconsm, who received a land grant from the United States. The work was begun by connecting the rivers at Portage City by a canal, and building dams and locks on the Fox River to make slack-water navigation.

It was next given over, lands and all, to the Fox River Improvement Company, which failed, and the job passed into the hands of the Green Bay and Mississippi Canal Company. This Company carried the 'Work forward until 1867, when the United States Government ordered a survey of the whole line with a view of undertaking the improvement. In July, 1870, an act passed Congress which provided for the improvement- by the Secretary of War, and for the appointment by him of a Board of Arbib store to assess the damage to the Canal Company by the transfer to the Government. This Board awarded $1,048,070 to the Company, from which wes to be itubstmcted $723,070, which the Company had derived from the sale of lands, and $180,000 'which the Company re-abed in the shape of water-powers and personal property, leaving $145,000 due them, which amount was paid in June, 1872. Last March Congress appropriated $300,000 for the improvement of the whole line of the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers.

Col. Houston stated his belief Diet there was no question but that the rivers, with short connecting canals, wing-dams cutting off lateral channels, and deepening and narrowing of the low water-channel, could be weds navigable. The matter of shifting sands haa been considered. and all other obstruction's, but there can be a clear channel kept for boats drawing eve feet, without doubt. The estimate on the plan adopted is $3,000,000.

There are twenty-two old and six new locks to be built and rebuilt, beside dams and dredging. The length of the whole channel will be 271 miles, of which not over 10 miles will be canal, so that steam con be used the whole distance from Green Bay to the Mississippi. The locks will be 35 feet wide and 160 feet long, with a depth of 6 feet in case of high water, and they will take boats of about 400 tons. The canals and the channel of the river- beds will be 70 feet wide, and the supply of water. at the Very lowest season, will be 3,000 cubic feet per second.

Ihe supply in the Fox River is limited, but the Wisconsin is 8 feet above it at Portage City, and can give an ample 'supply. After bearing Col, Houston, the Committee to meet O'clock this forenoon. For a abort season, DAN MORRIS Howonnrs HIB ERN ICA. or TOUR THROUGH. IRELAND.
