They found Thompson, dead, seated in a chair, and slumped over a table. On the table were two notes, one to his wife, protesting his love for her, and the other to police, directing that his body be taken to an Elgin mortuary. Thompson was questioned in connection with the St. Valentine's day massacre of seven Bugs Moran gangsters in a North Clark st. garage in 1929.

after it was disclosed that he had purchased six machine guns from a Chicago sports goods dealer several weeks before the massacre. The guns were delivered to an address in Kirkland, De Kalb county, and were brought to Thompson in Chicago by his first wife. Flees to Canada After the massacre, Thompson fled to Canada, but later returned and was questioned by Dr. Herman N. Bundesen, then coroner.
