The damage, according to officials. will amount to at least 837.500,000. intensive investigation will be made by the department of justice Into the provisions of present steamship and air mail contracts, Attorney General Cummings announced today. Action by the attorney general came as a climax to weeks of testimony before the special senate investigating committee which brought out numerous apparent irregularities in connection with contract provisions. 'A transcript of the senate bearings will be studied in the investigation. Missouri Man Named. Carl R.

Ristine of Lexington. was designated a special assistant to the attorney general. in charge of the department's inquiry. In addition to studying the evidence unfolded before the senate committee. Col.

Ilistine wax instructed to examine 'any other evidence which may be found to be available and to conduct all proceedings which may be found to be necessary." Appointment of Col. Ristine to take charge of the investigation was generally interpreted to mean that the evidence brought out by the senate committee warranted study and might be made the basis for revision of some existing contracts under the authority given to President Roosevelt in the independent offices appropriation bill for the current fiscal year. Inquiry Evidence Available. Mr. Cummings previously had announced that evidence presented in the senate investigation had been made available to the justice department.

The department described Col. Pastime as having been a prominent lawyer in Missouri for a number of years. He was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Judge of the Missouri Supreme court in 1926. There have been several indications of a desire on the part of the administration to modify existing ocean and air mail contracts since the disclosures before the senate committee. Chairman Black of the committee has expressed his intention of requesting the alteration on several occasions and is understood to have communicated his views to the President.
