Much of the credit for this success must go, therefore, to the performers, because of the clarity and skill with which they portrayed the, characters and enacted the scenes. They did work that evidenced convincingly the thoroughness and high merit of French training and of the French of acting and singing.

Truth, semblance of complete naturalness, and yet deftness and precision In movement, pose, gesture, and mien marked all that was done. The story has to do with the Vagabond, a nature loving, wandering man, who, filled with the joy of life and the happiness of mere refuses to yield to the so-called pleasures the home and the obligations it and family impose. The lure of the great outdoor and the call of the winding road are in his blood and he will not be bound. He comes, to a harvest field, meets" there a young girl who loves him, and who promises to go with him in his wanderings, but he knows what wan-1 dering means, so he takes to the road without her. Years afterwards he returns, finds her married, but with va son is He comes into the home, adjusts all the troubles that'are there, is begged to stay, but when all save the ased and dying husband are away at Christmas service, he takes his staff and little pack and starts away to freedom and the smiling outdoor world.

It "isa story filled with the breath of the fields and hills, and the men and women-busied in it are wonderfully human and lovable. The whole theme is fo different from the average grand opera that it refreshes and rejoices. And the music, which Leroux has is. unlike that in any other score band of Ella G. NEW 'YORK. Special Cor-espond-ence. An evening wrap is more and sometimes less than a covering. It Is a bit of psychology. It Is meant to assure us that we did grow up almost as beautiful as we hoped we would.

For this reason we ourselves can never regard such a garment as an extravagance, no matter what its cost. The above wrap is one of those tn-spirlng bits of color and beauty which always persuade us that we haven't passed our thirtieth birthday and that our second chin has not begun to It Is made of inde'structible Saot arms forward and back on Imagine, then, how beautiful' are the bands of chinchilla upon' this This wrap Is not meant for warmth of course. It is just one of those trifles to throw on between dances. The evenips. wraps for warmth, are often in the' shape of pelerines, long and gathered about the neck' linet.
