16 F) The nation's 13th largest Protestant church was created today as the Evangelical and United Brethren in Christ denominations united to become the Evangelical United Brethren church. Promptly at 9 a. m. the four Evangelical bishops and five United Brethren bishops, clad in brilliant scarlet, gold and purple robes, marched to the rostrum in Christ church here and joined hands. Hand Shake Marks Union The senior United Brethren! bishop, Dr.

A. R. Clippinger of Dayton. then shook hands with Evangelical Bishop John S. Stamm of Harrisburg, marking the physical union of the two churches.

"I now have the high and holy privilege of reading to you the declaration of union," intoned Bishop Clippinger. Clearly and slowly he read the formal statement that united the two churches into one world-wide denomination of more than 700,000 members. The former Evangelical church had 260,000 members and the United Brethren 454.000. All this I declare in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost," he declared, rapping a gavel to signal completion of the merger that was first proposed a century and a half ago. Speaking briefly afterward.

Dr. Stamm declared "this union marks another step forward in the unification of the Protestant churches in America." To Build Greater Structure Dr. Stamm reaffirmed the basic beliefs of the two churches, during communion service, saying: In this act of holy communion we now as Evangelical United Brethren reaffirm our wholehearted acceptance of and loyalty to this basic affirmation of the Christian faith. Christ died for our sins. The founding fathers of our two united churches accepted this truth upon this basic truth we propose to build this greater structure." To Elect Nine Bishops Following the ceremonies, the new united church began a five day con ference to work out details of unifi cation and to elect nine bishops.

Eight colleges, eight benevolent homes, and three seminaries are in volved in the union. The bishops to be elected are ex-' pected to be the present five United! lour LvanKf church bishops. They are V. O. Weidler, Kansas City, Ira D.

Warner, Pomona, Fred L. Dennis, Indianapolis, J. Balmer Showers, Harrisburg, and Bishop Clippinger, United Brethren; and Bishop Stamm of Harrisburg, George E. Epp, Napcrville. E.
